Prospect Spotlight: Christian Moore (2021)
Programs go through up and down periods, and all it takes is one young prospect with the skill set and mindset needed to help bring them back to dominance. I’m not saying it’s a sure thing that it’s going to happen, but Cape Henry Collegiate in Virginia Beach may have that guy in rising sophomore Christian Moore.
Moore played a big role for the Dolphins as the sixth man as a freshman, showing his ability to come off the bench and provide instant offense at a young age. The 6’0” combo guard can play on and off the basketball, score and distribute for others and is willing to do whatever it takes to help his team win.
“I do a little bit of everything I can to help my team win,” Moore said. “I can put the ball on the floor, get to the rack, shoot it from outside and beyond, have a high IQ and good court vision and I can even defend.”
Moore’s ability to make shots is what really stood out from watching him during the season and during the summer where he split time with Boo Williams and Team Thrill 15U. He’s a confident shooter off the catch, but he can also create space off the bounce where he can get to the basket, get to the line or hit contested shots off the bounce.
With all of that already there, it hasn’t stopped him from living in the gym this summer and continuing to improve his game all-around.
“I’m still working on my ball handling, shots off the dribble and my strength,” he said. “I feel like I’ve gotten stronger, faster, my handles have improved and my shot is a lot more consistent. I also feel like our guys from last year are more mature and lot stronger and more skilled.”
It doesn’t get much better from a coaching standpoint, as Moore is being coached by Cape legend Mark Hall who has put numerous players at the division one level. Hall’s son Devin Hall was drafted in the second round of last year’s NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder after a successful four year career at UVA, and his former teammates Chris Clarke (Virginia Tech) and Marcus Evans (VCU) are among a group of players who have gone on to have success in college after their time with Hall.
Cape has two seniors who are committed to division one schools in Dajour Rucker (Marshall) and Danny Banister (Hampton), and Moore has a fellow sophomore in 6’7” Bryson Spell that will likely continue that trend as well. It’s no secret Moore says, as he tries to soak up everything he can learn from Hall while he’s there.
“It’s good to learn from a great coach like him. He always pushes me to my limits and beyond and he always looks out for my well being and never sugar coats anything.”
While it’s going to be a while until he has to worry about college decisions, he is ready to start making a name for himself and hopes to bring his team back to the promise land this year.
“I want to be 1st Team All TCIS, I want to win the TCIS and get back to states and win that. I just want me and my team to dominate this season.”
There’s no doubt that Moore is one of the most impressive freshmen in the Hampton Roads area, and he’s only going to continue to improve with his confidence and hard working attitude.
