Oldham County guard Sam Powell is hoping that his scoring ability will help get him on the floor as a freshman. Powell says that is biggest strength as a player is his long range shooting and ability to find open teammates. “I feel as if I can score at will. My defense is very good but I still need to improve in that category. I need to keep improving on my ball handling, being more aware of the defense and that sometimes I need to pass up a good shot for a great shot.” Heading into the season, Sam expects his team to win the district championship and use his scoring ability to help his team win.

Powell played his 14u AAU season with Higher Level Basketball. Sam told me, “We didn’t do too bad. We made a run to the semifinals in the Oldham County Classic. We competed well and all of the losses we had were close and competitive.” Coming from AAU season, Sam is hoping to build on his individual success, “my coach was comfortable with me attempting to take my man one on one because 90% of the time it would mean points for my team. One thing that could also carry over is my defense. I played very good defensively over the AAU season.” Heading into his freshman year at Oldham, Powell is hoping to make the JV team and help the varsity win their district and region championships. He also wants to “grow as a player and become better in all areas of my game.” It is extremely early for the 2022 class and Oldham County is notorious for not playing kids much on varsity until their Junior and Senior seasons so we may not see Sam Powell on the varsity floor for a couple of years but keep the name in mind as he progresses through high school.
