Program Awards: M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs
Taking a cue from our friends at Prep Hoops Illinois, we are going to dive into programs across the state looking at their teams in a variety of categories in our Program Awards! Today we examine M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs!
Program MVP
Dontaie Allen (Pendleton County)
Much has been said and written about Allen both nationally and locally in the past few months. The 6’6 wing committed to the University of Kentucky early this month and now sets his sights on winning 2019 Mr. Basketball after getting his college commitment out of the way. Dontaie has gone from low ranked to top 100 in every national ranking.
Top 2019 Prospect
Isaiah Cozart (Madison Central)
Where Allen is the MVP, Cozart is not far behind him in terms of value to the Mustangs. Isaiah had a monster season on both ends of the court and racked up double digit offers in July. On one day alone, Cozart added 9 offers. Cozart intends to sign in the fall period and should wind up at the mid major level and have a chance to play right away as a Freshman.
Top 2020 Prospects
Dayvion McKnight (Collins)
McKnight is one of the best Juniors in the state and one of the top point guards regardless of class. Dayvion does a little bit of everything for his team to win. Winthrop has already offered and there should be more coming in the future.
Marcellus Vail (Collins)
The other half of the starting back court for both Collins and the Mustangs, Marcellus had a monster AAU season for M.A.T.T.S. with multiple games over 30 points and torching the nets in Louisville on back to back weekends in July. Vail proved himself worthy of a top 5 ranking in our 2020 class rankings.
Sleeper
Mason Shifflett (Teays Valley, WV)
A Kentucky native, Shifflett is a big time shooter who holds offers from Stetson and Air Force but he was playing really well before he suffered an injury in the second July live period. Mason peaked with a 28 point first half in a game at AAU Nationals in Orlando. Look for his offer list to grow as his season at Teays Valley moves along.
Biggest Stock Risers
Dieonte Miles (Walton-Verona)
Miles played one weekend with the Mustangs and ended up with a half dozen offers. He committed to Xavier this past weekend and certainly made the most of his short experience playing with the 17u Mustangs.
Terrin Hamilton (Scott County)
Hamilton rode the momentum of a strong end to the high school season into a big spring of AAU before he was derailed by a broken wrist at state AAU in May. Terrin bounced back to have a solid July and is on the radar for several schools in addition to making a huge jump in the 2020 class rankings.
