Maryland/DC/VA FAA Standouts: Guards (Part 2)
EAST STROUDSBURG, PA — The Hoop Group Future All-American Camp annually draws some of the country’s top rising freshman and sophomores, and this year was no different. Prep Hoops was in the gym for the duration of the four-day event, and now it’s time to take a look back at what we saw. Here we resume our standouts series by looking at some of guard standouts from Maryland, DC, and Virginia.
5’11 PG Jason Nelson | Team Loaded VA/Varina (VA) ’21
Jason Nelson showcased a complete overall game which included shot making and playmaking abilities. He is not the biggest guard, but showed that he can be crafty and finish from a variety of angles around the basket. Nelson is a winner at all levels, but also showed that he can stand out in a camp setting.
5’10 PG Devin Ceaser | DC Premier/St. Mary’s Ryken (MD) ’21
Devin Ceaser‘s best days of basketball are definitely ahead of him, but he showed signs throughout the week. He did a bit of everything, including handling pressure, setting the table, knocking down perimeter jumpers, and finishing at the basket with either hand in traffic. Ceaser just turned 15, but he will likely play a major role as just a sophomore this upcoming season.
5’9 PG Elijah Hawkins | New World/DeMatha (MD) ’21
DeMatha’s roster features a hidden gem in Elijah Hawkins. The diminutive lead guard put on a show last week. Hawkins is really good at using and reading ball screens, uses a quick first step to beat his opponents off the bounce, and finishes well in traffic.
6’1 PG Quadir Pettaway | WACG/Hampton Roads (VA) ’21
Quadir Pettaway was one of the best shooting point guards we saw all week. The skilled sniper out of Hampton Roads Academy was very efficient from the field, and showed that he could make shots both off the bounce and from the catch with range.
6’2 PG Darrius Tilghman | Team Thrill/City (MD) ’21
One thing we really love about Darrius Tilghman is his ability to see the floor. It seems as though he’s hit a growth spurt, and that helps him see over top of the defense even more clearly. Tilghman was one of the best pass-first point guards we saw at the camp.
