Kentucky’s Top Shot Blockers
The state of Kentucky as a whole generally has a lack of size and elite shot blockers. Right now there are more quality rim protectors that the state has had in a few years. Here’s a look at some of the best shot blockers in the commonwealth.
Isaiah Cozart, Madison Central – 5 blocks shy of Kentucky’s career shot blocking record, Cozart will finish his career as the best shot blocker Kentucky has ever seen. Isaiah is only 6’7 but has a 7’4 wingspan and incredible defensive timing that has allowed him to block over 500 shots in his career thus far.
Trey James, Sheldon Clark – Trey could eclipse Isaiah’s record by the time he’s a Junior. The big fella from the mountains has had multiple triple doubles already in his career and should wind up as the career block’s leader for Kentucky by the time he graduates Sheldon Clark.
Dieonte Miles, Walton-Verona – Miles won’t get to the career blocks list because he missed almost his entire Junior season due to injury. Dieonte is a remarkably quick second jumper who is more than capable of blocking multiple shots on one possession.
JJ Traynor, Bardstown – Traynor is capable of being the next Dieonte Miles as a kid who arrives on the scene as a high major recruit this time next year. Traynor is a really good rim protector with his 6’8 height and long wing span.
Jamarion Sharp, Hopkinsville – Good luck to anyone in the second region trying to score at the rim on Sharp. Jamarion is over 7 feet tall and just as long. Sharp is a really good shot blocker who keeps improving as his coordinaton and defensive timing improve.
Nick Martin, Knox Central – Martin is not as tall as most on this list but he is very athletic and knows how to use his body.to block shots without fouling. Martin is the best shot blocker in the 13th region and should average multiple blocks per game as a Senior.
Riley Bodner, Lincoln County – Riley has great defensive timing and use that, combined with his 6’8 frame, to block and alter a lot of shots. At his best when guarding another post player, Bodner should block at least 100 shots this season in the 12th region.
Pete Knochelmann, Covington Holy Cross – Holy Cross coach Brandon Grammar praised Pete’s ability to alter shots at the rim and block several per game this summer. Look for Knochelmann to have a break out season for Holy Cross.
