Kentucky’s Top Backcourt Duos
Right now in Kentucky, there are some really great backcourts. There are multiple schools with college prospects at both guard spots and the guard play in the state is some of the best I have seen. Here’s a quick look at some of the best guard duos in the state. There will be some articles soon breaking down the best inside/out pairs in the state, etc. but feel free to let us know in the comments if you have any duos you think I missed.
Keaston Brown and Marques Warrick, Henry Clay – Brown and Warrick play so well together as Brown penetrates the defense and Warrick hits open shots or puts the ball on the floor and finishes at the rim.
JJ Ramey and Matt Cromer, South Laurel – Another Junior/Senior duo, Ramey and Cromer will look to lead South Laurel to Rupp Arena. Ramey may be the most underrated recruit in 2018 while Cromer has started to make a name for himself in 2020.
KyKy Tandy and KJ Crump – Instead of thunder and lightning, Crump and Tandy are more like lightning and lightning. Both guards are quick and a lot of fun to watch. They will try to get UHA back to Rupp Arena this season.
Howard Fleming and Tyren Moore, Male – If Male is going to make a push to get to Rupp Arena under new coach Tim Haworth, Fleming and Moore are going to be a big reason why. Fleming is a slasher and Moore a shooter. Combined they’re really good.
Dayvion McKnight and Marcellus Vail, Collins – Two of the best Juniors in the state, McKnight and Vail team up to make a high scoring duo that will try to get Collins back to the Sweet Sixteen after they played there are freshmen.
JJ Kalakon and Dallas Rufus, Waggener – If the Wildcats hope to compete for a 7th region crown, the pressure will fall on JJ and Dallas to get them there. Kalakon is at his best with the ball in his hands while Rufus is a shooter and slasher off the wing or on the point.
Kyle Stivers and Jared Courtney, Franklin County – Stivers is a big time scorer while Courtney is a drive and kick specialist. For Franklin County to go deep in the 11th region tournament, Kyle and Jared will combine to get them there.
Makhi McGuire and Donnie Miller, Newport – Miller made serious strides this spring and summer with a big AAU season while McGuire is likely the biggest beneficiary of Tahj Harding’s transfer as Makhi will get more shots per game now.
Jackson Sivills and Noah Dumas, McCracken County – Sivills is our top ranked player in 2020 while Dumas was electric with the ball in his hands when we saw the Mustangs play this summer. Definitely a pair to watch in the first region.
Carson and Connor Guthrie, Mayfield – Twin brothers, the Guthries seem to have been in high school for a decade. Both are big time scorers for the Cardinals and are hoping to lead their team to Rupp Arena in their final season.
Carter Baughman and Kaelin Drakeford, Mercer County – Carter is one of the more underrated players in the Commonwealth while Drakeford is a two sport star for the Titans. If Mercer wants to bounce back from a disappointing finish to last season, Baughman and Drakeford will be a big reason why.
