Jayhawk Summer Finale (2019 Point/Combo Guards)
Here is a look at the top Class of 2019 Missouri point/combo guards from last weekend’s Jayhawk Summer Finale in Overland Park, KS.
Lamel Robinson 5’10” Team Rush (Park Hill South)
Extremely quick scoring point guard who displayed his ability to get buckets in bunches throughout the weekend. He is a problem to try to defend with his quickness and burst to get to the basket combined with his ability to knock down perimeter jumpers. When he is doing both at the same time, you can put up 20 points in the book.
Rich Johnson 5’9″ Team Rush (Lee’s Summit West)
One of the fastest guards in the tournament with the ball. He can get from Point A to Point B in a mini-second and he has the ability to stay under control and change directions. He gets to the basket for layups and can stop on the dime and make pull up jumpers from the mid-range. He also has good 3-point shooting range.
Ahmad Louis 6’2″ Marcus Denmon Elite (Oak Park)
A talented scoring point guard with good size and the ability to get buckets at all three levels. He has a high-arching 3-pointer that was very accurate throughout he weekend. He has solid handles with the ability to create separation from his defenders to make jumpers.
Damien Loyd 5’10” St. Louis Majestics (Kirkwood)
The talented point guard joined the Majestics for the final weekend of July and made a huge difference with his facilitating and shot making ability. He fit in nicely with his new teammates by showcasing his passing skills. He also made several key 3-pointers off the ball. Scored 13 points in the second half in a big victory over Team Rush.
Dezi Jones 5’10” Knights Basketball Academy (Hannibal)
An excellent dual-threat combo guard who can get buckets with a lot of confidence. He averaged nearly 30 points a game as a junior, so he knows how to put the ball in the basket. He plays with good speed and pace and looks to attack the basket at every opportunity. His float game is good in the lane and he can knock down 3-pointers to keep defenders honest.
Desi Williams 5’10” KC Run GMC (Park Hill South)
A pass-first point guard who plays his role perfectly as a facilitator, floor general and tenacious on-ball defender. He is a solid ball handler who has the ability to get in the lane and find open teammates. He is fully capable of getting a bucket when he it is needed.
Jake Branham 6’2″ MO Team Carroll (Springfield Catholic)
Small school standout who did a nice job at the controls of a high-scoring Team Carroll outfit. He is a high-scoring guard for his high school team, but he displayed the ability to facilitate and get the ball to his talented teammates while getting buckets and knocking down his open 3-pointers.
Trent Champagne 6’3″ T.E.M. Select (St. Charles West)
A solid point guard with excellent size who enjoyed a very productive weekend. He handled the ball well and really shot the ball well from 3-point range. He is a tall, rangy player with good mobility and a high basketball IQ. He works well at either guard position.
Jacob Farnsworth 5’11” All-Missouri Attack (Fordland)
A slick ball-handling point guard who impressed me with his poise and confidence with the ball. He is an excellent 3-point shooter, plus he has the ability to create space with nifty escape moves to get buckets off the dribble. He is also a solid passer with both hands.
ShaMarr Wright-Thompson 6’1″ NdaGym (Hogan Prep)
A quick and talented lefty point guard who did an excellent job making plays with his speed and shiftiness with the ball. He was able to slither into the lane and get buckets plus he was also very good in the transition game. He is at his best when getting to the basket.
