Incoming Impact Players (Part 1)
With the trend of high school basketball, a lot of players are now leaving home to transfer to boarding schools and live with host families to attend bigger programs and play a better schedule. Here in Virginia, with school starting in a week or so, we’ve learned of just a few incoming players from out of state that will be playing basketball next year in Virginia.
With some of the best post grad teams and a national powerhouse in Oak Hill, there are plenty of guys coming in for just that. Here’s a look at 9 guys who will be coming from out of state to play at either Massanutten, Hargrave or Oak Hill.
Jarren McAllister | 6’3” PG | Massanutten Post Grad
The Virginia Tech commit is set to be one of the best players in post grad basketball. McAllister has all of the physical and athletic tools to be a stud point guard at the high major level. He’s super explosive around the basket, he can break you down out of the triple threat or off the bounce and he can pull up and knock it down if you by chance can stop him from getting to the rim. He’s also a pit-bull on both ends of the floor.
Brandon Suggs | 6’7” G | Massanutten Post Grad
Suggs is a high major guard who was a stud all EYBL long for AOT out of Atlanta, one of the best teams in the EYBL this summer. He has great size and a big frame for a guard, and he’s able to play on and off the basketball. He’s a shot maker who can do it off the catch and off the bounce, and from deep or midrange. His size allows him to take contact in the lane and finish as well.
Davonte Gaines | 6’6” WF | Hargrave Post Grad
The biggest name in a star studded and division one filled cast coming into Hargrave’s Post Grad team, Gaines can do it all and has the size to be a big time player in the SEC. The Tennessee commit plays with poise, he’s long and athletic and he’s wired to score the basketball. He can score from all three levels, can guard multiple positions and he still has a lot of room to grow his game as well.
Jeremiah Davenport | 6’5” WG | Hargrave Post Grad
Another guy who’s wired to score the basketball, the former Wright State commit is set to blow up and will likely see high major interest at Hargrave. He can play on and off the basketball, but his ability to create himself shots in the half court and in transition is what makes him so dangerous. He can make contested shots off the bounce from deep and the midrange, and he’s a guy who attacks the basket hard and isn’t afraid to test you at the rim.
Mickey Pearson | 6’7” F | Hargrave Post Grad
Athletic, long and skilled for his size, the Kentucky native will be the perfect hybrid forward for Hargrave and the way they like to play. He can step outside and draw post defenders out, and he post up smaller wings if they want to go big. He’s a high flyer in transition who can put it on your head, you can play him at the high post where he makes good decisions and he’s skilled enough to work in isolations situations with the ball in his hands as well.
Cole Anthony | 6’3” PG | Oak Hill Academy 2019
The top point guard in the country is now attending arguably the top program in the country, and you’ll see that he isn’t the only big time name heading to The Hill. The son of former NBA star Greg Anthony, Cole is as electric as they come on both ends of the floor. He’s super explosive when attacking the rim, he sits down and defends the basketball and he’s a nightmare to guard in one-on-one situations. He’ll be on the national stage where he’ll be able to show why he’s considered a future lottery pick.
Jahmius Ramsey | 6’4” G | Oak Hill Academy 2019
A freak of nature athletically, Ramsey transfers into Oak Hill from anther premier program in IMG Academy in Florida. He plays way above the rim in transition, and isn’t afraid to challenge guys at the rim either. Off the bounce he has a wicked crossover, he can post smaller guards and he’s a good finisher through contact with both hands. His size and athleticism gives him a big advantage on both ends, and he’s wired to score the basketball.
Kofi Cockburn | 6’9” C | Oak Hill Academy 2019
Also from New York, like Anthony, Cockburn is one of the most physically gifted and intimidating post men in the country. He’s a massive individual who owns the paint with his upper body strength that allows him to dominate on the glass and defensive end, but he’s also very quick and explosive for a guy his size. He finishes everything around the rim with a dunk, he gets up and down the floor and when he wants to he absolutely owns the paint against any and everyone.
Chandler Lawson | 6’6” WF | Oak Hill Academy 2019
Lawson will be the perfect glue guy for them because he’s going to have to play a little bit of the four and the three, but that’s okay with him. He’s extremely long and a fluid athlete, and his length allows him to play inside and on the perimeter. He can score from all over the court, and he doesn’t need the ball in his hands to do so. He’ll play the key role of the mismatch problem that can take bigs outside or post up smaller wings.
