Creme Open Run: Best scorers
The 2nd Annual Creme Open Run gave us our first glimpse of the new class of prospects coming up in San Diego.
More than 65 rising eighth graders (and a handful of seventh graders) participated in two camp games before camp coaches and evaluators selected the top 30 to participate in next weekend’s 3P Creme of the County.
While not going into too much detail on rising eighth graders, we’ll give you our impressions of some of the top kids at the Open Run in a series of reports. This report touches on the event’s best scorers.
Creme Open Run: Best Scorers
Papa Mbengue, Darnall Charter
The 5-9 Mbengue (pictured) has an excellent build and scored at will if the defense did not shade him to his off hand. What impressed me the most was his efficiency. Mbengue didn’t waste dribbles and was a willing passer when defenders cut off his drives. He shot it well from three, too.
Dalton Norvell, Olive Peirce MS
Norvell, a long, wiry 5-7 scorer hit shots from all three levels, and assertively attacks the paint in the halfcourt. I was impressed with how he changed speeds and always played with great composure.
Ty Hendler, Digueno MS
One of the more impressive overall prospects at camp, Hendler is a lanky, but potent, scoring guard with a quick first step and the ability to finish through contact.
Kristian Gonzalez, Rancho Del Rey MS
A scorer deluxe, Gonzalez (5-10) scored in every way imaginable, and was comfortable operating off of ball screens. He was easily one of the more complete players on hand.
Derrius Carter-Hollinger, Rancho Del Rey MS
The youngest Carter-Hollinger brother might be the most talented. At 5-11 and blessed with a prototypical basketball frame, Carter-Hollinger is an aggressive scorer off the bounce who gets most of his buckets in and around the paint.
Mikeal Pink, Lemon Grove Academy
The wiry, 5-10 scoring guard has a nice looking stroke from three, and can also get buckets off the bounce.
David Soto, Bonita MS
Soto could have been on the list of best playmakers, but the 2024 guard was equally impressive as a scorer. He is exceptionally fast in the open court, but changes speeds deftly to keep defenses off balance. He scored at the basket, with the pull-up and from three.
