3 Teams to Watch this Season (5A)
There is a ton of talent in Arizona, with a lot of great teams out there. However, these are the top three teams you need to watch this season:
Sunnyslope – Sunnyslope is the defending 5A state champs. However, the lost 10 varsity players from last season. Only 5 players on this year’s roster will have played on varsity before. This may be cause for concern but Sunnyslope is a very good program and they have a very good leader at the point guard position in Zach Paloma. Paloma is a pure point who just makes his whole team better and plays very good perimeter defense. Despite having a presumable inexperienced team, I would feel very comfortable with Zach running the show. I am very interested to see how Sunnyslope does this year.
Apollo – Apollo made it to the quarterfinals last season and I think they’ll be back and better than ever. Emmanuel Taban is always impressive and I think he’ll improve and could possibly lead this team to the state championship game. Taban is one of the best players in the class of 2019 and should increase his scoring from 17.4 points per game to the low to mid 20’s.
Millennium – Millennium has one of the most promising young prospects in Arizona in DaRon Holmes. Holmes has turned in a great summer, getting offers from schools like Grand Canyon University, Arizona State University, Cal, and New Mexico. Holmes alone is enough of a reason to go watch Millennium play this year. It will be interesting to see how far he can lead this team this coming season.
