Today, we’ll take a look at some of the best post players and big men. Stay tuned even more breakdowns moving forward of the rising sophomore class!
Efton Reid | 6’11” C | Steward School (#1 Overall)
Skilled well beyond his years, Reid can give you buckets in a number of ways. At a legit 6’11”, he has long arms and which allow him to keep plays alive, but he also has tremendous footwork in the post. He can score with both hands, has a jump hook over both shoulders and he can step out and shoot the ball out to the three point line as well.
Roosevelt Wheeler | 6’10” C | John Marshall (#3 Overall)
“Rose” as he’s known by teammates and coaches, isn’t quite as skilled as Reid just yet but he’s a high motor big with a budding skill set. He’s a terrific rim protector and rim runner that can run the floor with guards, and he is a good finisher in traffic around the rim. He’s working on his jump shot, but he can step out and knock down the midrange and he’s a very good free throw shooter.
Oluwasegun Durosinmi | 6’9” C | Virginia Academy (#7 Overall)
“Duro” as he’s known by teammates and coaches is still a project of sorts but he has a terrific frame and athleticism that is well beyond his years. He works in the paint on the glass on both ends, he’s physical and can finish above the rim in traffic. He’s a guy who will continue to get better but already has things you can’t teach.
Matt Nunez | 6’9” PF | Woodside (#12 Overall)
Another guy who’s still somewhat of a project with a high ceiling, Nunez has a decent skill set offensively that allows him to contribute already. He can shoot the jump hook with both hands, seals and finishes well and he can get up and down the court. He needs to work on consistency but as a young big man he has a lot of potential moving forward to be a top 10 kid in the state.
Tyrell Harris | 6’6” PF | Potomac (#19 Overall)
A bouncy and long 6’6” forward that’s likely still growing, Harris puts up numbers against big time guys regularly. He’s very active in the paint and he’s quick off his feet which allows him to contest shots and rebound over guys bigger than him. He runs the floor well, finishes everything around the basket and has the tools to become a very productive big man in a year or two.
Kyrese Mullins | 6’5” PF | Oscar Smith (#21 Overall)
Yes he’s a little short at 6’5” but Mullins has a terrific frame and post game that allows him to dominate in the post. He played JV for Oscar Smith last year and dominated that, and then he played with Team Durant 15U where he showed he can do it against the best of the best. He’s quick for his size with a good spin and finish, and he’s a bully who outmuscles and outworks guys taller than him on the block.
Joseph Peters | 6’8” PF | Jefferson Forest (#31 Overall)
When we talk about projects Peters is likely the biggest one on this list, but he’s come a long way and made big strides this summer. Right now he’s a catch and finish big, but he has above average hands and he can finish with both hands around the basket. He’s becoming more mobile and if he can continue to work on his body and all around game he’ll have a good shot at being a division one kid moving forward.
Evan Castellanos | 6’5” PF | Benedictine (#33 Overall)
A big bodied but kind of short big man, Castellanos has an array of moves in the post and midrange that allows him to be very productive. He can work with either hand with his back to the basket, has a face up game that includes the midrange and can run the floor. He’ll have to work on transitioning to move of a pick-and-pop four if he doesn’t grow however.
