Today, we’ll take a look at some of the most athletic players and walking highlights in Virginia. Stay tuned even more breakdowns moving forward of the rising sophomore class!
Allen Strothers | 6’2” PG | Menchville (#5 Overall)
Strothers was mentioned in the dime droppers too, but he’s starting to fly to the basket as well. He has good reach at 6’2” and he gets off his feet quickly and is able to catch the lob in transition and in set plays as well. At the LC Bird Summer League he caught multiple lobs with two hands within the flow of the offense. With as much as he plays in transition his improved athleticism is going to give him a big boost.
Jaylani Darden | 6’3” G | Norview (#8 Overall)
Darden is starting to grown into his body and that’s scary because he has an athletic frame and style of play so he’s really going to take off. He had multiple triple-doubles as a freshman, showing his athleticism on the glass and on the defensive end. He has good length and is likely still growing, and he’s now showing the ability to attack the paint and finish above the rim. It should be a big boost for him and his style of play as well.
Wes Peterson | 6’5” WF | Bishop O’Connell (#17 Overall)
If there was a dunk contest on this list, there’s a good chance that Peterson would win it. Heading into his freshman year video emerged of him throwing down windmills and jumping over kids in a pep rally, and this summer he showed that bounce as well. In transition he’s a walking highlight reel, he can jump off one and two feet and he has a strong frame so it won’t be long before he starts catching bodies!
DJ Simms | 6’2” PG | Hanover (#24 Overall)
Speaking of strong frames, Simms has one which allows him to play in traffic and he’s springy too so he’s able to body up at the rim and finish. He’s super explosive, as at 6’2” he’s able to easily go off a vert, two footed leap and throw it down. In transition he glides seamlessly through the air and can throw it down with one or two hands.
Chris Brown | 6’3” WG | Jamestown (#34 Overall)
Long, lanky and athletic, Brown had a standout freshman year at Jamestown and should be one of the top scorers in the 757 this year. One thing he has on both ends of the floor is the ability to play at and above the rim. He’ll use his springs in transition to throw down big dunks but he also isn’t afraid to contest dunks at the rim and make big time blocks.
Tanner Selkirk | 6’2” WG | Lord Botetourt (#38 Overall)
Known as a shooter, Selkirk is a very underrated athlete as well. He’s a strong 6’2” guard who attacks the rim hard and isn’t afraid of contact. He can go off of one or two feet, and has decent hang time. He’s posted videos of him throwing down windmills and other impressive dunks so if you’re in the western part of the state don’t get caught on a poster now!
