Today, we’ll take a look at some more of the best shooters in Virginia. Stay tuned even more breakdowns moving forward of the rising sophomore class!
Marcus Banks | 6’2” G | Walsingham (#15 Overall)
Regardless of class, Banks should be considered one of the elite shooters in the state. After reclassifying and transferring to Walsingham Academy, Banks was the second leading scorer as a freshman for the TCIS champs. When it comes to straight catching and shooting, Banks has tremendous form and confidence and he’s as consistent from deep as anyone in Virginia.
Lamonta Ellis | 6’3” WG | Hopewell (#22 Overall)
One of two freshmen who started for a talented Hopewell team this past year, Ellis has shown the ability to be a good “three and d” guy moving forward. He doesn’t have the most picture perfect form, but he has great size as a shooter and has become more consistent and confident with time. He’s going to be a guy that gets better and better with time.
Jamonte Smith | 5’11” G | Faith Christian (#36 Overall)
One of the elite scorers in the Roanoke area, Smith lit it up as a freshman after taking over with the departure of 7’2” big man Brendan Newton who is now at Liberty. Smith isn’t just a stand still shooter from deep, he’s a guy who can make shots from all over the floor off the catch or the bounce. He has good range and doesn’t need much room to get his shot off either.
Mac MacDonald | 6’0” WG | Collegiate School (#37 Overall)
Head Coach Del Harris is coming off of one of the best seasons in recent memory for Collegiate, and he says that he plans on starting MacDonald this year as a sophomore. The intriguing thing about MacDonald is that his father is huge, like 6’7” huge. At the level that MacDonald shoots it, and it’s pure, if he can grow a few inches he’ll be a guy that will look to be a college level shooter.
Grayson Honaker | 5’11” WG | Honaker (#41 Overall)
Yes, his name is the same as the high school, and the way that he scored it as a freshman he’ll likely be the man at that school for a long time. Honaker is one of the best shooters in SWVA, and he’s going to score a lot of points as he broke the VA freshman points record with 601 points, surpassing current Kentucky star and former #1 player in the state Keldon Johnson. Honaker has great footwork getting into his shot, he can create space off the bounce and if you help off of him he’s going to torch you from deep.
Cam Cormany | 5’11” G | Radford (#44 Overall)
The son of legendary Radford coach Rick Cormany, Cam can flat out let it fly and is the next in a long line of freshmen who played a big role on a talented Radford team. Cormany is a combo guard but he thrived playing off the ball last year with his ability to let it fly from deep. He has a quick release, effortless range and a very high IQ which helps him get to his spots and make shots.
Promyse Ferguson | 6’2” WG | LC Bird (#45 Overall)
He’s somewhat of a project still, but Ferguson is a promising young prospect out of Bird who has produced some of the best shooters in the state over the past few seasons. He has good length and size already, and he’s getting more confident every time you watch him. He understands the game well and is able to get to his spots within the offense and knock it down with ease.
Zach Rosenthal | 5’11” G | Steward School (#50 Overall)
On a young Steward team last year, Rosenthal was one of the more productive freshmen in the area. He has silky smooth form off the catch that includes a perfect follow through and it’s the same every time he shoots it. He has a high IQ and while he isn’t the most athletic guy he has great fundamentals and always thinks the next shot it going in.
