2021 Point Guards: Most To Prove (Part 2)
In this article:
With the 2018-19 season quickly approaching, there are endless prospects out to show they can play with the big boys at the next level.
Last week, I broke down 10 junior point guards (Part 1 and Part 2) who must prove their worth this fall. The week prior, I focused on 10 senior point guards (Part 1 and Part 2).
Here’s a look at some more sophomore point guards who will be looking to do just that here this season.
ICYMI: 2021 Part 1
A’drelin Robinson (Oldsmar Christian)
A pure athlete and tested scorer, A’drelin Robinson may be undersized at 5’7″, but he can get it done. He scored half of his team’s points (16) in a Class 3A state semifinal loss this past season. Headed from Florida A&M to Oldsmar Christian, Robinson gives his new squad another dimension, pure speed. He comes in at No. 31 in the 2021 rankings.
It is hard to not be impressed with the potential of Trey Moss. The 6’1″ Windermere guard certainly has room to improve with his shot selection, but he makes all the right passes, has good form on his jumpers and can cut and run to the hoop often. He’s a real leader already as a sophomore and I expect to see his confidence grow. Moss ranks No. 12 in the 2021 rankings here in Florida.
An academically smart kid, Curtis Butler Jr. is focused on one thing and one thing only when he is on the court; basketball. The 6’4″ guard is going to fill out his thin frame, but his ballhandling skills and outside touch are two potent skills already. This is going to be an instrumental year for the Booker sophomore on a team loaded with athletes. Butler Jr. ranks No. 21 in his class.
Talk about shooting and hard work and that will lead you to Jalen Smith. Formerly of Faith Christian, the 5’11” sharpshooter and high IQ passer moves over to defending Class 9A Oak Ridge. Smith is always active on the floor whether he has the ball in his hands or not. He never complains, leads by example and is pushing the ball up the floor routinely. Smith is No. 14 overall in the 2021 Florida rankings.
I know Bethune Cookman commit Josh Marte is the guy at Osceola in terms of handling the rock, but Joshua Blazquez is ready to share a brunt of that load. Alongside Marte and fellow 2019 starters Isaiah Palermo and Jaduhkiss Soto, there is room for Blazquez to make a name for himself. He’s a gifted ballhandler just like Marte and is able to finish with both hands, distribute, shoot and keep his teammates in check. Blazquez is No. 63 in the 2021 Florida rankings.
