Vegas Classic Scout: Twin Cities Pirates
One of the better games of the Vegas Classic matched the Pentagon Schoolers and the Twin Cities Pirates. Prep Hoops takes you through this game highlighting some of the top Pirates performers.
Twin Cities Pirates
Dj Purnell, 6-4 2018 forward.
- First possession of the game DJ grabbed a dribble hand-ff to attack a slower defender for an And1. Ball handling skills is not something we talked about with DJ in the past but he surely beat his man off the dribble to score. Pollard scored the first seven points of the game including a release off a screen hitting a three.
- Scored his fourth field by taking a wing and crushing him on the block to easily catch and produce a physical score.
- Had a tough time shooting foul shots but not jumpers. Looked comfortable making shots from 15 feet.
- Late in the game DJ ran the full floor to collect and putback a miss for an And1 that tied the game. Great hustle play.
- Made clutch foul shots late in the game to tie the score and he was shooting those because once again he hustled for a putback
- A double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Made 6 of 9 attempts.
Khari Broadway, 6-2 2019 guard
- Opened the game at PG and with the Pirates exclusively running a high ball screen offense to begin the possession Khari did a nice job of using the screen and then making the right first passing read
- Defensive effort early was impressive. Deep stance that the ball handler could only beat when he was able to get Khari close to him and with no help near.
- As a PG he did his fair share of using the Magic backdoor shielding the ball and then quickly making a play as it opened including a spin to the rim for a foul and foul shots.
- Love how Broadway is working in a deep stance but also beating the high ball screen with a rapid fire over or under to cut off his man.
- First score was off a catch and rapid spin to the cup for a touched in basket.
- Scored points on three attempts, had three assists.
Jaeden King, 6-5 shooting guard
- Missed his first four perimeter jumpers but reacted to those misses with a hard chase and twice was able to putback his miss.
- Does a fantastic job moving without the ball to get his feet ready to catch and release. King’s confidence is high and he’s always ready to release with that touch.
- Gave the team 11 points on 5 of 19 shooting.
Karsten Broadley, 6-5 small forward
- Karsten has done a fantastic job finding ways to get himself jumpers. Moved around the zone to catch and hit and then chased down a ball and hit another jumper.
- Scored 11 in the first half including three threes. The third was hit on a reversal in transition just before the halftime buzzer.
- Broadley’s shot looks really good coming out of his hand. Very confident right now it seems.
- Scored 11 points making half of his eight attempts including three treys.
Tommy Chatman, a 6-3 guard
- Tommy didn’t arrive until the four minute mark of the first half but when he did he stepped on the floor and delivered the perfect pass to Pollard in the post for a score
- Had three assists but was never able to get into the game rhythm after coming later.
Manny Tamba, 6-0 guard
- As the game moved on Tamba got better. Handled without mistakes, dashed into open space with the ball or to catch the ball using his speed to finish before size could contest.
- Defensively Tamba limited the Schoolers best player in the second half forcing the guard to take several tough shots.
- Was better as the game moved on scoring four times with four assists.
