Vegas Classic Scout: Pentagon Schoolers
One of the better games of the Vegas Classic matched the Pentagon Schoolers and the Twin Cities Pirates. Prep Hoops takes you through this game highlighting some of the top Schoolers performers.
Pentagon Schoolers
Justin Hohn, 6-1 2019 point guard
- Loved his transition push against the Pirates slow rotation. The Pirates chased a ball and slowly retreated so Hohn’s head was up noticing the back of Pirates heads and turned up the speed for a score at the rim.
- His man was up aggressive on Justin early and Justin made him pay first with a baseline attack and later with a gorgeous hesitation dribble into the finger roll.
- When the Pirates switched PGs Hohn battled over the screen and forced a turnover. The second PG was not able to ignite any offense against Hohn.
- The Pirates did a poor job of stopping the ball and Hohn made him pay regularly including ten points quickly.
- Later in the first half Hohn saw an opposing player run with a wild closeout so he waited, attacked, and scored another flashy finger roll.
- Outstanding first half that also included a back screen into a sprint to the top of the arc catching and hitting a three while his man ran into the screen at the foul line. Perfect usage of space to get that quick releasing jumper out of his hands.
- As the game moved on and defenses put forth more effort to fight to Justin and keep him in front, he then moved the ball to teammates for high percentage shots. The passes were solid but the timing was even better waiting until the defense was drawn to the best spot for his team.
- Did a really nice job forcing turnovers out of many offer guard Tommy Chatman of the Twin Cities Pirates. Chatman had a tough time beating Hohn to space with the initial dribble.
- With a defender all over him in perfect position, Justin still made a beautiful spin move into a high glass finish. The angle was quite tight but Justin had the skill to touch the ball in at a high speed while off balance.
- Began the overtime beating his man right and then beating the help in that same direction for an extension make on the other side of the rim.
- Justin then went the other way and forced a five second call out of the top Pirates player.
- Made the foul shots putting the game away.
- Finished with 23 points, four rebounds, and five assists on 8 of 14 shooting from the floor and 6 of 7 foul shooting.
Andrew Bergan, 6-7 2020 forward
- Showed off his shooting touch quickly with a catch and hit at the arc after a ball reversal. Andrew recognized a lazy sagging defender so he was quick to catch and knock down. Moments later he chased down a putback for a foul and a pair of free throws.
- Grabbed three boards for the game.
Gavin Terhark, 6-8 PF/C
- Gavin stepped on the floor and immediately ducked in on a player four inches taller for easy position to catch and get fouled. Terhark showed a nice touch making the foul shots.
- Excellent block taking on a hard driving athletic guard and standing his ground for the send back
- Consistently sealing his man and giving the perfect entry target using all of his 6-foot-8 frame early in the game.
Boden Skunberg, 6-4 SG
- Scored two early jumpers and the second one saw Boden fake his man right, attack left and then use the step-back when his man caught up. A beautiful score.
- Boden’s read of the floor is first rate. He had the ball, rotated it, saw his man over sink to help and quickly got ready for the return catch and hit.
- Good rebounder for a wing as Boden has a feel for the carom and works towards collection with effort.
- In transition the Pirates were slow to react so Boden set his feet, caught and hit with in rhythm showing off a stroke that will soon net many offers.
- Scored a supporting dozen points on five of nine shooting plus grabbed six boards.
Trejon King, 6-1 PG
- Many of the early assists came out of the hand of King. The Pirates were a sloppy defense so every time there was an over ration or a late help he hurt them. Like on the Skunberg three when the defense over-rated and King sent the ball back to the passer quick for the three point make. Good recognition of the hot hand.
- King is that steady, head, tough guard that a coach can depend on. He steadied his guys verbally but when his team needed a big play he raced down a long o-board and hit a clutch baseline jumper.
- Did a really nice job staying disciplined forcing Pirates athletes where he wanted to go and this helped get a late turnover.
- Blocked a three point attempt of the top Pirates shooter with less than a minute to go. Outstanding hustle on his closeout.
- Five points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Logan Heim, 6-9 C
- The Pirates are a small team so Logan on the floor meant he had a pretty free paint area to gather boards. Was it easy? No, the Pirates had athletes flying at him to get putbacks but Logan swallowed balls throughout the first half and sent quick outlets to ignite the Schoolers in transition where they did a lot of first half damage
- Logan is a really good passer and at times was too unselfish. Loved his post to post feeds
- Six boards total, five in half one.
Elijah Klein, 6-7 PF
- Moves well for his size which allowed to quickly get position against a smaller team including against a stronger player that was two years older but Klein’s intelligence and quickness gave him the leverage edge.
- Nothing too fancy from Elijah in this game, he was your active off ball guy that worked to position near the rim and completed plays with high percentages.
- Pirates didn’t have a player that could deal with his backdown into a spin.
- Scored 10 points on six shots plus grabbed five boards.
