UA Super Select (Saturday Standouts)
Here is a look at some of Saturday’s standouts from the first day of the UA PTN Select Super 16 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Evan Schneider 6’6″ Mid-Mo Elite 16U: The bullish 2020 forward from Ladue High was dominant in his team’s first victory against WI Surge as he scored closed to 30 points while controlling the boards on both ends. He physically overpowered the opposition with post ups and offensive rebounds for put backs as well as a couple of nice rim runs for dunks. And if that wasn’t enough, he stepped outside and knocked down a couple of 3-pointers. He continues to get better and better.
Jarquavious Cain 6’5″ All-Arkansas Red 17U: The 2019 forward from Nettleton, AR is an explosive athlete with a high motor on both ends of the floor. That spells problems for the opposing teams. He ran the court, blocked shots and rebounded at a high rate. He also has a solid skill set as he handled the ball and knocked down jumpers off the dribble. His effort was non stop.
Derrin Boyd 6’2″ SI Select 17U: A talented 2019 point guard from Caldwell County High in Princeton, KY, Boyd is a skilled perimeter shooter and excellent facilitator. The lefty can dial it up from long distance in a heartbeat with his quick release and excellent range. He can also get in the lane and drop some nice dimes to his open teammates with his unselfish play and expert court vision.
Illyaas Harris 5’9″ Team Ramey 2021: The smooth 2021 point guard from Marquette is a nice floor leader who runs the team at both ends of the floor. In an exciting game against All-Arkansas Red, he had 11 points and four steals, including several big plays down the stretch. He moves the ball well on offense and was a pick-pocket phenom on defense with his quick hands. He was taking the ball away from good guards with nice handles and quickness. He plays with a lot of poise and savvy.
Trent Lippoldt 6’6″ SEMO Select 17U: The hard-working forward from Doniphan High was very productive in the two games that I watched him. He displayed some nice footwork around the basket and a good touch to finish off his post moves. He runs the court well and finished well on the break, including a few impressive slam dunks. He will also handle the ball and make good decisions as a passer.
Kortez Hamilton 6’3″ Arkansas Bandits 17U: An all-purpose combo guard who excelled in many facets of the game to help his team succeed. He handled the ball as a point guard and could facilitate, attack the basket and rebound well for his position. He is also an excellent on-ball defender who used his size and tenacity to create problems for opposing teams trying to organize their sets.
