Top Bigs from the Summer Challenge
The bigs below showed skills over the weekend to consistently give their team a good post presence! Take a look at the top bigs from the games I saw.
Austin Andrews 2020 D1 Minnesota Forward
Andrews is a little undersized around 6’6 in the paint, but don’t tell him that. He hustles and battles every second on the court. The way he goes after the ball and plays hard the whole time is fun to watch. Andrews will go NCAA Division I based on the fact he has so many tools to his game. He rebounds, defends, passes, and can score when called upon to do so. On a loaded D1 Minnesota squad Andrews gets lost in the mix sometimes. He is super productive and I believe will turn into a leader at the next level.
Karan Gaines 2019 Young Legends Forward
Gaines has a nice back to the basket game. When the opportunities were given to Gaines on the block he converted at a very high rate. Gaines was also effective on the defensive end blocking shots and pulling down big rebounds. The versatility of Gaines being mobile enough to switch on any position is huge. He is going to make a good small college prospect.
Cade Meyer 2021 Wisconsin Academy Post
Meyer is a player with many tools in his bag. He was playing up an age this weekend, but you would have never known as he fit right in with Wisconsin Academy. Meyer started off impressing with his defensive presence. He finished the day by showing he can score it extremely well on anyone if given a good look inside. He even surprised with the explosion he had to the rim for several thunderous jams.
Nolan Schwarting 2019 Iowa Dynasty Forward
Schwarting was a force at the defensive end aching the five spot providing his team with rebounding and great on-ball defense. He is tall around 6’7, but very versatile allowing him to switch 1-5. The energy he brought was infectious to his team as they watched him block shots, dive on the floor for the basketball, and race to wherever he was to be on the court. On the opposite end on the block, he continued to show his versatility moving very well without the ball for great looks down low. The activeness in his game with the way he moves so well is really intriguing for any college program at the small college level. An area that really shocked me was how well he put the ball on the floor.
Connor McCance 2020 Breakaway Basketball Post
At 6’8 McCance impacted the game in all of the small ways that often go unnoticed. He scored the ball well on the block. Toughness helped McCance to finish shots against stronger, taller, athletic bigs. McCance was super valuable on the boards pulling down several key rebounds on the defensive end to secure the victory.
Tre’Shaun Jones 2019 Rockford 5-0 Jones Post
Jones was not the flashy player immediately standing out from the tip. Instead, you had to wait and let him show you just all of what he could do in the paint. He was active rebounding the ball on both ends. Blocking shots is a specialty of his with his great hops and will to go after the basketball. He did a great job of staying straight up when he went for the basketball. Jones scores the ball at a solid rate down low. The intangibles Jones provides on the block is what is going to land him at the next level. He will be a good small college big.
