Top 20 Point Guards (2021)
The Class of 2021 rankings are here!
Always remember at PrepHoops.com we rank on what a player WILL BE, not on what they are today. In no way does this mean stop striving, because rankings always have flaws and always overlook good players.
We featured the top 10 players Wednesday.
Read below about #11-#20.
Of course this can all change and rankings are merely a flashpoint of speculation on who will do the most after high school. Still, these players earned their current rankings with play on the court.
If you want to look at the complete rankings, smash here.
The following list reveals the top 20 point guards in the state alongside their statewide overall ranking. The first player listed is the #11 point guard, and also the #29 overall player in Tennessee in 2021.
#29 John Windley (Brentwood)
Younger brother of David Windley, John looks to be more advanced at his young age. David will begin his freshman year at elite academic institution Washington University (St. Louis). John is a little more assertive and strong in traffic. David was a great scorer from the mid-range. If you want toughness at Brentwood this fall/winter, then you need only call on Baby bro John.
#31 Konata Werts (Brentwood Academy)
Konata runs with Team Manimal Elite out of Kentucky. For this reason I rarely get to evaluate his AAU play. For Brentwood Academy, Konata dashes around the floor with purpose. His quickness remains his greatest asset. Konata can shoot, but doesn’t need to. He can penetrate, but doesn’t need to. He is a team-first player with me-first skills.
#33 Grant Hurst (Cleveland)
Maturing into a varsity presence for Cleveland this year, Grant Hurst is a name known to coaches in Chattanooga-region. Grant also scores big buckets for Tennessee Tigers 16u and Head Coach Chip Smith. Hurst is a really refined shooter already.
#38 JaQuan Lax (Boliver Central)
Of the ten players on this list, JaQuan had the best varsity winter. For Bolivar Central, JaQuan routinely scored double figures as a freshman. Lax is revered by teammates and opponents for his scoring prowess.
#39 Caleb Brooks (Brentwood Academy JV)
Rarely do junior varsity players rank in the top 50 of anything, but Brentwood Academy is a rare program. Like Memphis East 2018, BA 2019 is loaded with guard talent up and down the program. Caleb is built like a young safety with strong shoulders and impressive balance. His comfort with physicality is an early indicator of toughness. Look for Brooks to dominate junior varsity and possibly earn some varsity looks under Brentwood Academy Head Coach Hubie Smith.
#40 Cameron Donegan (Ridgeway)
The Team Thad 15u point guard, Cameron Donegan creates problems all over the court. He is incredibly quick, alert, and decisive. Donegan gets knocked down the list because he appears fully grown at 5-foot-7. The skills belong in the top 15 region, but shorter point guards must be virtually flawless to advance to high major college basketball.
#41 Jaylan Wetzel (Murfreesboro Siegel)
After a disappointing 2017-2018 season Siegel is poised for a breakout winter. Jaylan Wetzel joins Zion Swader and Matthew Schneider in an absurdly deep sophomore class. Wetzel’s gifts include shooting touch and basketball I.Q.
#43 Cedric Williams Jr. (Cane Ridge)
This is an under-the-radar selection. Cedric Williams can get off the deck or get to the basket from the guard position. Cedric is very mentally tough and hard to rip. Expect Cedric to shine for a better Cane Ridge team in 2018-2019.
#49 Antonio Anthony (Nashville Pearl Cohn)
Antonio Anthony runs the floor like a fearless bull in Pamplona, Spain. Like Caleb Brooks he is physical and bruising in traffic. Anthony leads Team Tae Dem Boyz 15u into battle. His handle is pretty good. Right now Antonio plays with a narrowed look of the court. He sees forward better than sideways. As he matures his game needs to add court switches. Reminds of Jacque Vaughn (Kansas alum).
#61 Miles Versa (Nashville M.B.A.)
The coaches of Upward Stars-TN love Miles Versa. He is quick with the basketball, but more importantly Versa makes intelligent decisions. He has a wonderfully advanced basketball I.Q. MBA is a program that teaches the game really well. Last year Versa was a little small for the position. Should he get to 6-foot-0 his ceiling is tantalizingly high.
