Summer prep spotlight: Q&A with Trent Hudgens
Moon Valley rising junior Trent Hudgens sat down with Prep Hoops writer Eric Newman to discuss summer basketball, as well as what it will take for his high school team to have continued success in AIA play.
Newman: What’s your goal in summer basketball this year?
Hudgens: I kind of come out with something to prove, so when I come out to summer ball and play well it shows that I can really play with anybody.
How do you get to the point that you’re getting looks and offers at the college level?
I can become more of a vocal leader, score at will and get my passes more precise and on time. I think I’ve been working on that too.
What in your skillset gives you hope that you can succeed at the college level?
I have really good court vision, and I’m a pass-first point guard. I can shoot, dribble and play defense, and they’re all getting better.
With so many good guards in Arizona, how do you try and make yourself stand out?
It’s about moving around without the ball and setting good screens so other people to get open, and then when I do get the ball, show my skills there.
What has been the thing you’ve been improving most this summer?
I’ve been more of a vocal leader. For the past two years at Moon Valley we’ve been stacked with a bunch of really good players, and now a lot of them are gone because they graduated, so I have to step up more and get back to that.
What makes you hopeful that Moon Valley will have another successful year?
We all really lift each other up, and we all get hyped before the game starts, and when we’re all hyped it’s really hard to stop us. We’ve been to the semifinals two years in a row, so hopefully we can get better and I’ll get a ring before I’m done.
