Summer prep spotlight: Q&A with Isaiah Marin
Buckeye rising senior (formerly of Copper Canyon) Isaiah Marin sat down with Prep Hoops writer Eric Newman to discuss summer club play, recruiting and how he is improving his game on both ends of the floor.
Newman: How’s the summer been for you? Do you enjoy getting to play against a lot of the state’s best competition?
Marin: I love it, because I think I’ve always been overlooked, and feel like I haven’t gotten the attention I’ve deserved all the time, so I come here to try and show out.
What do you need to do to keep improving your stock and pick up some offers from college basketball teams?
I need to keep playing aggressively, and also getting more of my teammates involved when I’m playing point guard. That’s what college coaches like to look at, and I have to keep my energy up.
What skills do you have that give you hope you’ll succeed at the college level?
My size and athleticism and my speed allow me to play hard and go by people, and then get my bigs involved and get shooters open.
Have you gotten much of a chance to build chemistry with the other Buckeye players since you transferred there?
Yeah, we’ve played together a lot over the summer at team camps. Our team chemistry is getting there, and as long as we’re playing and hanging out off the court together I think we should be pretty good.
What do you need to do to capitalize on your senior year?
If I go out and be aggressive and be a leader to my team, both club and the school team, I’ll be able to do what I can on the court and the other players will follow that and play hard too.
You’ve said you’re underlooked, so what would you tell a college coach that doesn’t really know much about you?
I’d tell them that although I’m not that high on the rankings, I bring a lot to the table that most kids don’t always bring. I always compete and bring high energy, and I bring that mentality that not a lot players bring.
