Summer Jam: Derrick’s Saturday Dimes Part 2
Mequon, WI — Prep Hoops Illinois was back at Homestead High School for another action packed day od NY2LA Summer Jam. Bracket play began and it was win or go home Saturday. We take a look at some of the standout performances from Saturday’s afternoon and night match-ups here in Summer Jam: Derrick’s Saturday Dimes part 2
Standouts
G – 6’1’’ 2021 Ahmad Bynum – Mac Irvin Fire
Bynum also known by the nickname “black cat” was hot on Saturday and the Simeon High 2021 prospect had one of the top performances all weekend here at NY2LA Summer Jam exploding for 31 points in a hard fought win against Northern Kings. Bynum’s motor was on high from the beginning and didn’t stop until the final buzzer. Bynum is super quick has really good handles and can get to the rim with ease and play above it. What makes him a tough match-up is his pull up game where he can get his shot off at a blink. He hit shots from all over and showed range from deep. Really liked how he completed on both ends and when he is in the zone watch out because he can put up points in a fury and he did just that Saturday. Bynum will certainly be a prospect on many colleges radar and we will continue to track him as he enters his Sophomore year at Simeon.
G – 6’4’’ 2021 Grant Newell – Meanstreets
The Whitney Young HS prospect impressed Saturday scoring from all three levels, Newell started off attacking the basket early with some nice moves off the bounce and finished through contact well. In the second half of the game I scouted Newell hit two threes’ off the catch and showed nice fundamentals on the catch and shoot threes. A long lanky 6’4’’ Newell rebounded and defended also.
G – 6’4’’ 2021 Tevin Smith – Meanstreets
Tevin Smith attends Danville HS and is a strong combo guard who got to the lane at will and either finished or got to the free throw line for two. Smith guarded multiple positions and battled down low in the post for rebounds and would get out and lead the break for the Meanstreets 15U squad. Smith is a good athlete and it showed on a couple nice block shots he had including one that he blocked off the backboard.
G – 5’9” 2020 Marcus Watson – All-In Athletics
Morgan Park 2020 PG Marcus Watson battled against a very tough and loaded Phenom University team. Watson didn’t back down and used his quickness to penetrate and get to the rim. Made some really tough and crafty shots. Got to the line and converted for All-In. Liked that he didn’t back down from Phenom University even when they were down big in the game. Watson will be a junior at Morgan Park and will likely be called on to play a larger role this upcoming year.
