Summer Challenge: 2019 Evals Pt 1
We finished the July live period with coverage of the first annual PrepHoops Summer Challenge in Deerfield over the weekend. Now we begin to dive into our evaluations of the players at the event. Here is the 2019 Prospects Part 1!
PF Carter Thurman (Illinois Attack 17U)
Thurman is a 6’6” power forward that has good size and strength at 6’6”. Liked how he attacked downhill from the high post area and the lefty did a nice job converting at the rim. Tough forward that works best facing up and getting to the hoop.
PG Yamani Shareef (Illinois Attack 17U)
We have seen Shareef with both Attack and Hoopers this spring and summer on the circuit. What this point guard brings to the table is his ability to shoot the rock from the perimeter. He was hot from three in their opener against the Stars connecting on a handful of triples off the catch from the wings. Think he has the potential to be a sound perimeter defender at the next level.
SF Miles Moore (Illinois Attack 17U)
Moore is a 6’3” shooting guard is a powerful wing that did a nice job playing downhill getting to the rim where he consistently finished through contact on multiple and-1 opportunities. Solid rebounder.
SG Matthew O’Boye (Illinois Attack 17U)
O’Boye is a 6’3” small forward from Plainfield North High School that is a slashing wing that got out in the transition game as well. Potential defensively to check both wing spots.
SF Jacob Mazrimas (Illinois Attack 17U)
This Providence 6’4” small forward can hit a three and has size on the perimeter. Look for him to put up some numbers this year during the high school season.
SG Tristan House (Illinois Stars 17U)
House is a rangy 6’0” point guard that is a shifty ball handler that had a few drives to the hoop and hit a three from the wing. Like the athleticism and range he brings to the table.
SF Connor Ilyavi (Breakaway 17U)
It was lights out shooting from the perimeter for this Breakaway wing. He has been a consistent presence throughout the spring and summer, but he was absolutely in a zone in their game on Friday night. He connected on four triples off the catch particularly being effective from the wings. Big time spot up shooter.
SG Ocean Johnson (Breakaway 17U)
Johnson who is from Leyden High School is a plus athlete that flies around making plays on both ends of the floor. Multiple strong slashes to the rim and was also active on the offensive glass getting put backs.
SG Trevor Casmere (Breakaway 17U)
Casmere was also a consistent threat from beyond the arc. This Benet 6’3” two guard made several threes in the games we saw with a quick release from three. Also had a few tough layups.
PG Zach Vaia (Breakaway 17U)
Vaia is a tough and competitive point guard that is a crisp passer that threw several sweep passes in transition that led to layups. Offensively he loves to shoot threes both pulling up and off the catch. Quick release on his shot. At times can get a little shot happy.
PF Caden Phillips (Breakaway 17U)
Phillips is a physical undersized four man from Glenbard West High School. The rising senior is a tough rebounder that snatches them in traffic. Really effective on the offensive glass.
F Andrew Veon (Breakaway 17U)
Veon is an intriguing combo forward at the small college level with his 6’5” frame. Plays really hard and with an edge. Handles it well in space getting to the rim where he finishes through contact.
C Noah May (Breakaway 17U)
May is an upside play at the center position in the 2019 class. The 6’7” Downers Grove North big man needs to add strength to max out his ability, but he showed some intriguing skills. Active player with length that fought on the boards and used his length on the defensive end.
SG Raimundo Menocal (Hoops4Health 17U)
This Northridge Prep 6’4” shooting guard brings size for position to the table. He had multiple strong slashes off the bounce where he finished in a variety of ways with up and unders, scoop shots, runners, etc. Strong build and can take a hit at the rim.
SG Mazeed Oluewu (Hoops 4Health 17U)
The North Shore Country Day rising senior wing is a physical two guard that works best scoring off the bounce particularly on the baseline. Mid-range game has some potential.
