Recruiting Report: Nick Schaefer (2019)
Top-notch shooting will never go unnoticed on the AAU circuit. Nick Schaefer provides that in spades.
Schaefer, a 6-foot-2 guard from St. Cloud Cathedral, spent the summer playing with Comets Kirchner, where he not only put that shooting on full display, but also showcased other areas of his game.
The senior-to-be put in work developing his overall game this summer to counter overzealous defenders who know of his shooting prestige and has gotten to a point where he’s comfortable and effective attacking closeouts and making plays for others.
“I call myself a shooting guard and that is my strength but the thing I wanted to work on the most is being able to make plays with the ball and putting pressure on the defense,” said Schaefer.
Cathedral was one of the best teams in the state last season with Schaefer playing in a secondary role to big men Mitch Plombon and Michael Schaefer. He’s excited about the opportunity to take on a bigger role next winter.
“We’re losing our two starting big guys so we’ll have to play a different style next year,” said Schaefer. “It helps having those guys but I mean we’re excited to take bigger roles and show that there is more to our games. We have big shoes to fill and I’m excited for that.”
Schaefer is currently uncommitted but drawing a lot of interest from several local colleges.
“I’ve been hearing the most from St. Johns, Concordia-Moorhead and Bethany Lutheran and have visited St. Johns and Concordia-Moorhead. I’ve got a visit with Bethany Lutheran coming up this week,” Schaefer said. “I’m focused on trying to find a good fit both on and off the court.”
