Recruiting Report: Luka Eller (2020)
Lake Catholic 6’7″-6’8” forward Luka Eller (2020) is proof that scholarship offers aren’t the only indication of a standout spring. Although he’s yet to reel one in, Eller developed a catalog of Division I interest in the spring with C2K Elite.
“Purdue has been sending me a couple of letters. I’m pretty excited about that,” Eller said. “Miami [Ohio] is obviously there. Princeton has not really been talking to me but sending me stuff. Toledo has been talking. [Cleveland State] is up there. Dayton, I’m interested what Dayton says.”
Before heading to the Caribbean for a family vacation, Eller also went on visits to Duquesne and a pair of schools in North Carolina in mid-to-late June.
“I visited Elon around June 20 … campus was really nice, all of it’s really nice, the coaches were really nice to me.” He continued, “Then the day after we drove down to Davidson for an elite camp. It went really well. I got to meet the coaches and everything.”
Eller, the no. 9 overall prospect in Ohio’s 2020 class and the premier stretch forward prospect, explained that he’d like to live in North Carolina as an adult.
“I just like the vibe to it. Especially Davidson had a beautiful campus, same with Elon. I just feel like all of those North Carolina East Coach campuses are really nice,” Eller said.
Eller also remarked that he was impressed that Davidson asked him about his GPA before anything else. In summation, Eller will prioritize academics, campus, coaches, and the people when finding a college fit.
Currently he maintains a 4.1 GPA and will look to build on that academic transcript when he attempts his first ACT this fall.
Before that, Eller has business to take care of in a crucial July, when all schools mentioned will watch him play.
“Hopefully I’ll do good and we’ll get some visits down the road in August,” Eller said.
Our guess is that he’ll continue to put together nice outings with C2K. As a 6’8” kid in Ohio, Eller is just now enjoying the opportunity of playing alongside other talented bigs. Unlike the winter where he lines up at center and anchors the paint, Eller gets opportunities at the four and proves he’s a mismatch at that spot too.
“There aren’t a lot of people at my height and my athletic ability that can do what I do,” he said. “If there’s a kid 6’5” on me, I’ll post him up. If there’s a kid my height on me, they’re usually a little slower. I can just get around them. Or if they give me space I can just shoot it.”
Eller also shows the ability to switch on to guards in pick-and-roll situations, where he’s able to use his length and foot speed to stay in front.
Going forward he’d like to improve even more as a shooter and ball-handler.
