Recruiting Report: 2019 Kahlil Whitney
During my annual trip to North Augusta, South Carolina for the prestigious Peach Jam, I was also able to stop by the Peach Invitational Tournament. One of the top performers there was 2019 6’7 Kahlil Whitney. Whitney has lots of toughness, rebounds the ball on both ends, tons of athleticism and can score the ball in multiple ways. In the game I saw him play today he finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
He was able to touch base with us about how his busy summer is going, “Summer has been good, I went out to USA basketball two weeks ago, I played hard, gave it all I could and there was a lot of talent which made it really competitive so now I am here with these guys and we are just going to continue to put work in.”
He was able to work on a variety of things while spending time with Team USA, “Pretty much playing with the ball and moving without the ball, playing out of position and being versatile at different positions, learning to set ball screens and come off ball screens and just to play defense all the time.”
Rebounding the ball was something that Whitney did extremely well on Thursday, “Yeah my coach loves when I rebound and I love when I rebound too so and it also makes my stats look good and it is always good to get more possessions for your team.”
When asked how his recruitment is going, he had this to say, “Recruitment is going well, I will cut down my list to 10 schools right after Vegas.”
Whitney knows quite a few people at Illinois and that is a program that is going after him pretty hard and he recently took a visit there, “It was great, they showed me love and the coaches showed me a lot of love. They place a real fast pace, they get the ball up the court, set a lot of ball screens and shoot off screens so I like all that a lot.”
Louisville has a new coaching staff and is making him a top priority, “They have been recruiting me hard, they are all good guys there and I should be planning a visit there after July. They are telling me that I am their number one priority and they need a versatile wing and they feel like I am that type of guy.”
Georgetown is a school that Whitney has a great relationship, “I talk to Coach Ewing almost everyday and just those guys a lot. I went on an unofficial visit during their Midnight Madness and it is a great environment and great basketball so I really like it.”
Duke has been keeping close tabs on Whitney and he discussed that relationship, “They should be out here watching me either Saturday or Sunday. Coach K and an assistant coach have contacted me. They said they are going to come and watch me in July and that they like watching me.”
When asked when he might want to make a college decision, he said “Right before basketball season is when I will make my decision.”
