Prospect Spotlight: Maliq Carr (2020)
Maliq Carr is an outstanding athlete with a good problem on his hands.
He is a 3-star wide receiver with multiple Division I offers and a top 10 player in the state of Michigan for the class of 2020 in basketball. He’s not sure which sport he’d like to play at the next level, but if he can play both, he’d love the opportunity.
Last season on the hardwood, Carr averaged 17.7 points, 12.3 rebounds and 6 assists.
The 6-foot-6 forward is great at using his big body to attack the basket and finish through traffic. His endless motor allows him to get out in transition and collect a bunch of rebounds. Defensively, Carr is one of the best on ball defenders in the state. He’s extremely quick and knows how to turn a steal into a touchdown.
“My strengths are playing hard, defense and attacking the basket,” Carr said. “I need to work on expanding my range and staying out of foul trouble.”
Carr likes to mold his game after a few NBA stars, such as the Greek Freak (Giannis Antetokounmpo), Kawhi Leonard and Draymond Green. You can see a little bit of each of these guys in him. He is very sound defensively like Green and Leonard and he’s an incredible athlete like the Greek Freak. If he works on expanding his range, he could be a LeBron James type player. He has the physical tools and work ethic to be great in whatever sport he chooses.
Recruiting wise, he’s hoping to receive some bigger Division I offers in basketball over the next couple of years. He describes his style of play as just hard working. He is extremely focused on the court and not many people have been able to slow him down over the years.
“What sets me apart is how hard I work,” Carr said. “I don’t believe anyone else in the nation works as hard as I do.”
Basketball wise, Carr’s dream is to win a national championship in college and then make it to the NBA. Once he’s in the NBA, he’d like to win Defensive Player of the Year and Finals MVP.
Unless he gets the opportunity to play both at the next level, Carr will have to decide between the two sports. No matter what he decides to do, he has what it takes to succeed.
