Prospect Spotlight: Jordan Kumm (2020)
Last weekend at the Nike Summer Championship in Columbus, Ohio, Jordan Kumm was impressive. He’s been impressive for a while now.
The Beyond Ball and Ankeny Hawks prospect is one of Iowa’s best 2020 guards, and predicates his hoops prowess on the defensive side of the ball.
“I feel like I can defend pretty well, I can get up and pressure the other team and force them to turn the ball over,” said Kumm. “And then I feel like I do a pretty good job at facilitating and getting others open. And when I’m open, I can shoot pretty well too.”
Kumm, a 5-foot-9 combo-guard, started his offseason playing with Beyond Ball’s 16U group, but was recently bumped up to play with the older guys.
He’s been embracing the challenge.
“When July started up, (my coach) John Lamb moved me up to the 17U team, and that’s been going pretty well, we’re doing pretty good,” said Kumm.
“I feel like the game is a lot more fast-paced, everyone is a lot bigger, a little faster, obviously it’s a bigger challenge. I’m ok with it, and I like my teammates and there’s a lot of energy on that team.”
Kumm will use his spring and summer Beyond Ball experience and use it to help him excel next winter with Ankeny. He says his role as a junior will be much larger this year compared last year.
“My role will be more crucial because we lost some seniors. I feel like we’ll be better this year because last year we had a lot of underclassmen, and our 2020 class has played with each other enough, and we’ll make a pretty good team this year,” said Kumm, who averaged 5.3 points per game last season for the Hawks.
First, though, Kumm is looking forward to spending his last weekend of AAU ball in Las Vegas.
It’s also the last live period weekend of the year, and Kumm has already started to see some recruitment come his way.
“I’ve been talking to Bemidji State, they’ve texted me a couple of times, and Central, the Dutch coach was talking to me a little bit,” said Kumm.
“This weekend, we want to go down there and win championship. And as for our high school season, we want to go to state and win state.”
