Prospect Spotlight: Jeremiah Miller (2019)
Jeremiah Miller has the size, athleticism, scoring ability, and confidence to compete with other guards in the state of Tennessee.
At 6-foot-3, 185-pounds, Miller is able to hold his own, and yet, he doesn’t have any solid offers from Division 1 programs, which is unusual for a guard like Miller that’s very skilled. The aura of guards Miller has played against from Ridgeway to Southwind High School have received offers from D1 schools, while Miller is still being looked at by schools as only a possibility.
Schools such as Southern Illinois, LSU, Middle Tennessee State, and Missouri have shown interest in the senior, but has yet to pull the trigger on an offer. However, Miller remains humbled by the schools that are passing up on him.
“That’s my main motivation right there,” Miller said. “I see people every day get offers from certain schools, and it’s funny, because I played them. I have played them, and I have did this, and did that to them. I just look at myself as an underrated guard. I just want to open people’s eyes.”
During the Jerry Peters Memphis Summer Classic last month, Miller led the offense in scoring with some players out playing with their AAU teams or at elite camps. He finished ninth in scoring with 96 points. The Jaguars went 2-4 in the classic.
It’s a great thing Miller is a scoring guard, because Southwind will need his offensive game to be on point each night with senior forward Kameron Jones, who is considered by many as the team’s best player. Miller gets most of his points by slashing to the basket, but has scored from the perimeter.
Miller admitted his outside shooting needs to improve. In the classic, he made seven 3s. During the summer, Miller has been on what he has called “a shooting gun.”
“I shoot a lot of 3s,” Miller said. “Let’s say if I shoot seven 3s in a game, and I only make three. I don’t want to settle for less. I need to work on my shot more. I would rather settle for 7 for 7, then to be 3 for 7. Hard work pays off, and that’s pretty much what I want to do.”
Miller’s progress on 3-point shooting, along with his stingy defense, could pay dividends for the Jaguars to make it to Murfreesboro, Tennessee to compete for a state championship, a goal Miller has yet to accomplish so far in his high school basketball career.
But, Miller is confident the Jaguars have all of the tools to get there.
“I have been playing with these guys for a while now, whether it’s in a pick-up game or whatever,” Miller said. “I like our team’s chemistry. At the summer league games, the full team wasn’t there. We had starting guys out of town or they couldn’t play period, doing other stuff.
“But, when our team is at full strength, we look real nice. We click on all cylinders. It’s going to be pretty nice, and I’m pretty confident we can make it to the next level.”
