Prospect Spotlight: Davis Wagner (2020)
After a big weekend in Lawrence, Kansas, Cedar Rapids Xavier small forward Davis Wagner is a guy that’s landed firmly on our radar.
The 6-foot-3 small forward was scoring in bunches for Team Iowa White, a squad that advanced farther than any other Iowa team at the event.
He was especially gifted at finishing around the rim.
“What I like to do on the floor is get the rim and attack the basket, because finishing is one of my best abilities,” said Wagner.
“In the gym, I really work on finishing with English and getting my ball to spin in. It makes it a lot easier in games when I have tough shots to make.”
Last season, he played a little bit with the varsity, but gleaned most of his experience from practicing each day with the state tourney qualifying team.
“It really helped me with my confidence and experience at the varsity level. And I think it will really help me a lot going into this season,” said Wagner.
“And we’ve been playing in a lot of team camps, and my role has been to score the ball and get my teammates open.”
With Team Iowa White 16U, Wagner and his teammates have enjoyed a lot of success this spring and summer. They have one more tournament left, Prep Hoops’ Summer Challenge, it kicked off today in Chicago.
“From the start of spring, I think we’ve really improved. Our ball-movement has gotten a lot better and last weekend (in Kansas) was our best tournament we played in yet, we played really well,” said Wagner.
As for his recruitment, it’s been pretty slow so far, but that could change dramatically over the next 12 months.
Wagner is also a standout soccer player at Xavier, but he says he’s going to focus more on basketball moving forward.
“Playing soccer has really helped me out with my conditioning for basketball. And now that I’m a junior, I think I’m really going to start focusing on basketball,” said Wagner.
“I haven’t experienced that much recruitment yet, so I’ve just been focusing on my game and hopefully by the time the summer ends, I can get a few coaches interested in my game.”
