Prospect Intro: Grant Disken (2020)
Covington Catholic is less than 5 months removed from hoisting the state championship at Rupp Arena and if Junior Grant Disken has anything to say about it, they’ll be doing the same thing in March of 2019. Grant is having a strong AAU season with the Kentucky Defenders and is expecting to spin that momentum forward into the high school season. I recently caught up with Disken to discuss his current AAU season and his upcoming Junior year at Cov Cath.
PHKY: Describe your game for people who may never have seen you play. What are your strengths? What do you need to improve?
GD: My game is being the ultimate floor general in my opinion. I can lead a team very well by speaking up and using my voice and then applying my skill which include a deadly mid range and 3 point shot. Along with my jumping ability to grab rebounds and finish high above larger opponents. I can also use my defensive talents to lock up the best player on the court. As competition gets older and much bigger I need to focus on letting the game come to me and not speeding myself up too much which causes me to go out of control.
PHKY:Reflect on your high school season. Were you happy with your individual performance? Were you happy with your team results?
GD: I was very pleased with my individual performance and team performance. The Cov Coth JV team went 23-0 and then as I got moved up to varsity we finished off the year with a state championship. Stats wise I averaged 16 points a game on JV along with 5 assists and a few rebounds. I also had a 30 point game. Very happy with the way that my team and I played this year. A constructive and successful year.
PHKY: Who are you playing AAU with? How is your season going so far?
GD: I’m playing AAU with the Ky Defenders and we have been doing very well. We won the Ky state championship and then recently earned 3rd place down in Orlando at D2 nationals.
PHKY: What schools are recruiting you? Any offers? If you have offers, do you have a leader right now?
GD: Due to being in such a competitive school program, varsity playing time was limited this year so I have yet to earn an offer but my coaches have been talking about me and putting my name out there. No one knows who I am yet and I’m okay with that because by this time next year, people will know.
PHKY: What can you take from your AAU season and apply to your next high school season?
GD: Controlling the tempo is a huge aspect of AAU and high school. Playing smart basketball rather than just trying to get mine. At times I do need to take the most shots on the team but if a man is hot you have to keep feeding it to him and adjust my own game. Become an even better facilitator than I already am. I believe my drive and kick out to shooters in the corner is almost unstoppable.
PHKY: What are your goals for your next high school season?
GD: Goals for next high school season are endless. Number one goal is to accomplish a back to back state championship. A lot of people are doubting Cov Cath due to losing such big players like CJ Fredrick and others. Number one goal is to prove people wrong and know that we are still the best team in the state. Another goal of mine is to average a double double with points and assists. The way I get people involved and my scoring ability, I find this very realistic. Also to get on the first team of the region as we hopefully take the region and head down to state again. Winning 30 games would also be a huge goal of mine to show that Covington Catholic is here to stay and still the powerhouse. Starting every game and being one of the main guys is in my future and I can’t wait for the season to begin.
Grant Disken is not lacking for confidence in his game or in his team and that type of attitude is the kind that leads teams back to Rupp Arena. Although Covington Catholic has graduated multiple D1 players in the past year, Disken and his fellow upperclassmen will look to lead the Colonels back to the Sweet Sixteen.
