Prep Hoops Summer Challenge: Friday Recaps
2:20: 15U — Breakaway Basketball (IL) 62 vs Iowa Dynasty 40
Samuel Hoiberg came out red-hot, scoring eight points, including two 3s right off the bat to get his Illinois squad off to a good start, and they never let up. Hoiberg, the son of Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg, was the most effective scorer for Breakaway in this one, he finished with a game-high 13 points. For Iowa, it was Clear Creek-Amana rising sophomore Christian Withtow that was a bright spot, he notched 10 points in the loss. This Breakaway squad has a lot of weapons, and we’ll expect them to make a deep run in bracket play.
3:25: 16U — Iowa Dynasty 57 vs DiverseCity (IL) 52
What an impressive win this was for the guys from Iowa. It was a talented group from Illinois, but this Dynasty squad has all the pieces that make up a successful team, and looked awfully sharp while coming away with the win in this one. There was a trio of guys from Iowa that impressed; point guard Joey Goodman was the catalyst and led the way with 14 points, Maxwell Lampe looks like a legit big-man, he scored nine, and Jonny Joens was impressive while putting in 10 points of his own. For the Illinois quad, it was 6’5 sniper Gabriel Mason who was utterly impressive, he canned five 3-balls and scored a game-high 28 points in the loss.
4:30: 17U — Team Manitoba 57 vs Team Iowa Red 44
The guys from Canada came down to play, they are not messing around. This was a good Team Iowa squad that they beat by 13 points, and it looks like the Manitoba guys have what it takes to make a deep run in the forthcoming 17U tourney. Big-man Kyler Filewich told us after the game that he has a D1 offer to play at North Dakota, for basketball and football, he scored 12 second half points to help his team pull away. Sharpshooter Mason Kraus has some D2 offers, it was his red-hot shooting in the second half that helped Manitoba’s one point halftime lead swell to 13 by the final buzzer.
5:35: 17U — Rockford 5-0 (IL) 66 vs Wisconsin Triple Threat 60
This was probably the most entertaining game we saw today, there was a lot of talent and plenty of athleticism out on the floor. For Rockford, it didn’t take us long to identify slender 6’2 guard Jamil Jones as a standout, and he ended this one with a game-high 22 points, including 14 in the second half and two, late, clutch free-throws to ice it. Jones’ back-court mate David Williams was just as impressive, going for 19 points and canning four triples. The win for Rockford was especially impressive not only because it was a talented bunch from Wisconsin they got by, but because they had to overcome an early 18-9 deficit to beat them. Triple Threat has plenty of talent on their roster, and don’t be surprised if they make a deep run come Championship Sunday. Jaden Bell, a rising junior playing up a grade, was especially impressive while scoring a team-high 15 points for the Wisconsin squad.
