Lori Piestewa Tournament semifinal: Assist Outbreak vs. MV
Assist Outbreak defeated Miami Vikings, 69-35, in the semifinal round of the Lori Piestewa Native American Tournament varsity bracket.
The game was effectively over at the half, with Outbreak leading by over 20 and just coasting the rest of the way through.
Here are some of the game’s top players:
Ricardo Villanueva dominated offensively for Assist Outbreak, especially in the first half, slashing to the basket on the dribble and hitting lay ups for his team. However, his biggest impact on that end came from his perimeter jumper. At one point in the first half, he went on a 9-0 solo run, hitting back-to-back-to-back threes to take a large lead Outbreak would never lose.
Angelo Lewis certainly didn’t light up the box score for Outbreak, it played a major role in the victory, even as he came off the bench for a team that started all perimeter players. He played big and rebounded on both ends. One thing, again, that cannot he measured in the stats was how much fun he seemed to be having on the floor, literally smiling nearly every second of the 40 minutes.
Yoann Djassa is usually one of Assist Outbreak’s best scorers, and he did just that late in the game to pretty much put the game away. Most impactful was his defense and team leadership, though. He made life tough for opposing guards and showed legitimate joy from the bench watching teammates succeed while out.
Matheu Escovedo of MV played about a super well as could be expected for a team that was doomed in this game from the start. He found his way consistently to the basket for lay ups and made some quality passes to teammates that likely should have resulted in baskets and assists for his overall tally.
