July Recruiting Recap: Dawand Jones (2019)
Dawand Jones
6’8 | C | 2019
Ben Davis (IN) | Team Teague 2019
Offers: Kent State, Cleveland State, Ball State, Northern Michigan
Where His Recruitment Is At: Dawand has come a long way in a short time. His first offer came from Cleveland State and has now added two more mid-major offers and a DII offer. This is likely not the end as many low and mid-major programs fell in love with him in the last year but Dawand isn’t a guy that you normally see go the basketball route. So, I think some coaches were a little hesitant to offer sooner. Now, though, I think he has firmly planted himself as a MM prospect and should continue to find options at that level.
Scouting Report: Dawand is a big, thick post player who looks like he should be an NFL lineman. He has to be hovering around 300 pounds but his footwork and mobility for his size are ridiculous. Able to get off the floor and dunk, Jones provides a tough matchup as he can assert his dominance on the offensive end of the floor. He’s a fairly good rebounder in his own area, quickness in small spaces will be tough, though. He finishes well in the low post with both hands and is more than willing to use his size to create space. Long term, he will have issues matching up defensively but not many will match him on offense. Those who want to use him and assert their strategy will find solid payoff at the next level.
