Introduction to Trey Donaldson
Trey Donaldson showed up at this year’s Southwest All-American Camp hosted by Gregg Rosenberg like he had a point to prove to every national scout and college coach sitting courtside. The message in that point was simple, “I can play with these guys!”
Not only did he show up to play and performed very well, he shined at times and not in the way most kids shine in a showcase game. While he did go out and get him some buckets of his own, it was the fact that he was one of a handful of players showing effort on the defensive end and making the right basketball pass in a showing that usually celebrates individuality.
Donaldson was a pleasure to watch for spurts at a time. He went stretches playing mistake-free basketball. In about a one minute span during that camp I watched Trey come off of a pick and nail a jumper, and then followed that up with poking a ball out and creating a turnover and getting his squad out in transition and left a nice pass to a trailer for an easy lay-up. The last play of the sequence saw him get by a defender that was trying to get up in him and drop a dime off to a cutter for yet another easy bucket. That 60 seconds opened my eyes a little wider and put me on his fan list.
When I saw the next day that he had made the top-40 all-star team, I couldn’t think of many more that deserved that spot then the uprising 6-foot-1 2020 guard.
Last year as a sophomore at Gilbert Christian Donaldson put up somewhere around 11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals per game on a team that went 21-10 in 2A last year before dropping a heartbreaking 2-point loss to Red Rock in the State Tournament.
Over the spring, Donaldson has performed well for a talented Powerhouse Hoops Johnson 16U team while playing with some next-level prospects in 6-8 2020 wing Osasere Ighodaro, 6-6 2020 wing Kendyl Watson, 6-5 2020 wing TJ Green and 6-1 2020 guard Armani Johnson. The fact he is playing on a team with some recruit-able prospects and with his production on the floor, he should be opening even more eyes this month on the AAU circuit.
