Hoops for the Homeless tournament: top scorers
While many Arizona basketball clubs are out of town for national tournaments, the Hoops for the Homeless tournament in Avondale still showcased plenty of local talent.
Here are some of the tournament’s top scoreres:
Erron Mayfield: Another Level
Mayfield showed excellent body control when he found his way into the air, especially on floaters. In multiple games, he took contact well, and was able to hang in the air long enough to reset and position himself to put the ball in the hole.
Devontaye Mckinney: PHX Rebs
Mckinneyfound his way into the paint seemingly at will, and was able to finish against opponents of all sizes. His shot fell from outside as well, as defenders started backing off him to try and deal with his lay ups. In transition, he even threw down a few excellent dunks and got the crowd and teammates going.
Devon James: New Wave
James made his biggest mark from beyond the arc, hitting a ton of clutch threes, mostly from the corners. He did not have to have the ball in his hands a lot, and the shooting helped open space for the rest of the offense, which allowed New Wave to grab the second seed in the knockout round.
Jett Wade: Phoenix Soldiers
Wade settled for jumpers a little bit too often, but he certainly made his mark getting to the basket. Perhaps the tournament’s fastest player with the ball, he drew a lot of shooting fouls, getting most of his points from the line late in games when defenders were tired.
Deshawn Pearson: PHX Rebs
Pearson plays an extremely-athletic style of basketball, seemingly gliding on the court with the ball in his hands. His main goal always is to get to the rim, but he has the ability to knock down shots from all parts of the floor when the game called for it.
Ishmael Hogan: New Wave
Hogan played very well as the team’s small forward, hitting plenty of mid-range shots and lay ups off the pick-and-roll. He, like his teammate James, did not have to have the ball in his hands a lot to succeed in scoring, as he did well cutting off the ball.
