GRBA National Championship: Standout 2020 Prospects
Although Ohio’s own Hidden Gems Black took home the GRBA National Championship this weekend, we didn’t catch many standout performances from 2020 prospects. We’ll spotlight players from teams like HG-Black throughout August, but our list of standout rising juniors from the weekend is only two deep.
Kobe Righter, 5’11” PG, Nova (Alleyne) / Columbus DeSales
Righter played with tremendous IQ this weekend as Nova’s full-time point guard. He is always very involved in the play as a ball-handler with his ability to set-up teammates or score it off the bounce himself. He’s elusive as a finisher inside and rarely gets his shot blocked for a 5’11” guard who doesn’t possess explosive athleticism. Shoots it off the bounce very well. Righter can also move very well as an on-ball defender.
It will be interesting to see how Righter is recruited next season. Division III programs would be giddy if he slips through the D-II and NAIA cracks. He’s super skilled and smart, but he’s an unassuming athlete who is frankly undersized. Our bet is that he puts on some muscle and a scholarship is earned, but we’ll see. He can really play and he makes teammates better.
Zane Leitwein, 6’2” G, Ohio Hoopsters – Wofford / Gahanna Lincoln
Leitwein was really good at our Top 250 Expo last summer. We hadn’t seen him since until this weekend. And guess what? He was really freaking good again.
Despite playing a full season of JV at Gahanna last year, we like Leitwein a lot as a D-III prospect. He’s a deadeye shooter off the catch or one-dribble pull-up. Leitwein also got buckets off very smart cuts in the halfcourt. He can finish layups with either hand and has decent quickness with the ball. He’s a good enough athlete, despite being pretty thin. Plays hard on both ends.
