GASO WICHITA: Friday Night Standouts
GASO WICHITA: Friday Night Standouts
The second night of the Great American Shootout (GASO) Midwest event got underway on Friday in Wichita with a host standout performances.
Here, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several standouts from the event.
34 — Andrew Gagnon, 6’0, G, 2019, Andover, NLHA 17U
A terrific outside shooter, Gagnon is coming off a strong junior season at Andover and has seen that success carry over this summer with NLHA. He comes off the bench for NLHA to provide instant offense and helps the squad spread the floor as opponents have to stick with him on the perimeter.
33 — Clayton Hood, 6’0, G, 2019, Derby, Kansas MTXE Green
Hood can really shoot it from distance and showed that ability for Kansas MTXE Green throughout the weekend. He has a strong, 175-pound physical frame and brings the ability to rebound and defend as well. Hood can handle it a little and utilizes a head fake to free himself for a one-dribble pull-up jumper that he stuck several times in Wichita.
0 — Durrell Hudspeth, 5’11, PG, 2019, Wichita, KS MTXE 17U Navy
Hudspeth had a good showing running the point for KS MTXE, handling pressure in the backcourt and helping get his team into its offense. He has a solid pull-up jumper and was able to make several tough jumpers in a win over KM Elite on Thursday.
14 — Carlos Montiel, 6’3, F, 2019, Hugenot, WKE Eddy
One of the better players most fans have likely never heard of, Montiel has a big, strong fame and plays much bigger than his listed 6’3 height. He combines a big frame with a well-rounded game and an unorthodox offensive game. He handles it well, likes to drive to the basket and is a good playmaker and shooter from the 3-point arc. He is a tough match-up for most opponents as bigger players struggled to contain him on the perimeter but smaller players struggle with him in the paint.
9 — Mason Thiessen, 6’8, PF/C, 2019, Inman, WCS Team Driven
Thiessen is definitely a player who has been flying under the radar in Kansas hoops. Listed at 6’8, Thiessen has a huge frame as he combines strength and power with some finesse. He likes to post up and get big on the block, but has a skill set that extends to the 3-poin arc. He is one of several players on Team Driven that caught our eye in Wichita.
