Game Overview: Powerhouse Hoops Ortega
This weekend is jam packed with high caliber basketball, whether it’s at the Las Vegas Classic (Bigfoot) or the Fab 48 Tournament. One team stood out to me that I just had to watch and that is Powerhouse Hoops Ortega 16U. I heard a lot of good things about this team and especially about their three guards (Evan Nelson, Kiimani Holt, and Zay On-Tay Boothman). The three young guards did not disappoint.
Location: Bigfoot Las Vegas Classic (Cimarron Memorial High School)
Opponent: California Stars Elite
As soon as tip off occurred, Powerhouse Hoops Ortega put the pressure on with a full-court press. This press was specifically impressive due to their three very talented guards. Evan Nelson and Kimani Holt put the pressure up front, while Boothman roamed the middle like a free safety. The trio made up for a lot of easy steals and resulting in easy buckets.
Powerhouse Hoops Ortega got off to a hot start, once again led by their guards. Boothman started the game hitting three 3’s in a row while Nelson and Holt followed that up with a three of their own each.
Nelson looked like a true floor general, as he always impresses. He was able to run the offense nicely and was very good at getting his teammates open and then making the correct pass. He is a very high IQ kid.
Holt looked great defensively and attacked the basket with ease. This was my first time ever seeing Holt play and I was especially impressed with the amount of hustle he plays with on every single play.
Boothman demonstrated his ability to shoot the ball at a high rate. He also did a nice job running the offense, splitting that responsibility with Nelson. However, Boothman is best suited in the shooting guard role. Here he can absolutely torch defenders with his nice hesitation move and playing the 2 guard allows him to get more looks at the three.
At the half, the score was 36-29 in favor of Powerhouse Hoops Ortega.
The second half looked very similar to the first half. The trio of guards continued to keep their foot on the gas and continued to impress.
Final score 65-52 Powerhouse Hoops Ortega.
This puts the team at 14-1 in July and 45-7 overall this season.
