Austin Jordan is one of the young, and true, point guards in the Fort Wayne area. He plays outstanding on ball defense, controls the pace of play on offense, and puts his teammates in situations to succeed. His basketball IQ is showcased in his ability to get to his spots on the floor and put the ball in the hands of his teammates when they can be their best. As a ball dominant guard, he has proven that he can handle the pressure of tight situations as he’s been playing up throughout the spring and summer with Indy Heat Red 2020 (16U).
“I feel like I knock down the open shot consistently, get my teammates open, and play good defense.” Austin is one of the best on-ball defenders for the Class of 2021 in Indiana. He is extremely quick with his feet and hands. He strips defenders as the get into the lane with regularity and is quick off the bounce to get the ball up the floor.
He steps into jumpers with confidence and has started to finish better around the basket with both hands. As he continues to grow, he will be able to use his quickness to get to the basket and score under duress.
As the spring and summer AAU season is dwindling to an end, there as an obvious improvement in Austin’s game during the month of June. “The focus of my workouts is to get stronger, keep my jumper consistent, tighten my handle on the ball, and finish better around the rim.”
His recognition of his areas for improvement is a testament to how much he studies the game and understands his opportunity.
“I’m looking forward to leading my team (Fort Wayne South Side) this year and playing my role to make sure we compete with others.” Austin is coming of his freshman campaign in which he found himself in the starting rotation is their primary ball-handler from the point guard position. Being put into that role in a tough conference (Summit Athletic Conference [SAC]) forced him to elevate his level of play quickly.
Austin had his eyes set on the live periods during the month of July. “I want to prove that I can play at the next level in July. For my sophomore year, I want to show more of what I can do and prove that I can lead my team to wins with the loss of our seniors.”
Austin Jordan has a big year ahead of him at South Side as they graduated three seniors who were major contributors in the offense last season. Keep an eye out for him as his varsity freshman campaign and extensive summer experience as the starting guard on an older team has prepared him to elevate his game at Fort Wayne South Side.
