2020 Rankings Updates: Top Perimeter Scorers
Now that we’ve updated the rising junior class, it’s time to break them down much like we did the 2019 class.
While we did the 2019 class by area and position, we decided to do something a little different with the 2020 class. We will be breaking down these rankings updates by different characteristics and strengths of players that you will find on the basketball court.
Confused? You won’t be. Take a look at some of the top perimeter scorers in the 2020 class.
Jeremy Roach | 6’1” PG | Paul VI (#1 Overall)
He was mentioned in our top playmakers as well, but what makes Roach one of the top guards in the country is that he doesn’t have many holes in his game. As a scorer, he’s lightning quick with the ball in his hands, he’s a strong and explosive finisher at the basket and he can make tough shots from all over the floor. The way that he can create space and make shots and also get by defenders and score the basketball at all three levels makes him so tough to stop with the ball in his hands.
Cam Thomas | 6’2” G | Oak Hill Academy (#2 Overall)
There aren’t many better shot makers in the country, and Thomas showed that as one of the elite scorers in the Nike EYBL as just a sophomore this year. He has tremendous footwork both to get into his shot and to keep his pivot and create space, he’s patient and smart and he knows how to create space and get his shot off. He’s a microwave kind of guy who gets hot quick, he can make contested shots and he has good size and can finish in the paint. He has the total package as scorer.
Amir Nesbitt | 6’1” G | Virginia Academy (#18 Overall)
Nesbitt was a scoring machine as a sophomore at Virginia Academy and he showed flashes of that as well with Boo Williams this summer. A 6’1” combo guard, he’s a big time shooter from deep who gets hot quickly and has a quick release. He can get to his spots with ease off the bounce, he has the full array of moves in the midrange and he can create space off the bounce. He can flat out fill it up and is improving on his playmaking ability as well.
Jordan Battle | 6’3” WG | Norfolk Collegiate (#22 Overall)
Still under the radar because it’s so hard to tell what position he is, Battle is a good sized wing who finds ways to put up numbers no matter what is going on. He’s a streaky but good shooter from deep, he attacks the rim hard off the wing in transition and he attacks the glass on the offensive end as well. He always seems to be in the right place at the right time, and he’s the type of guy who won’t force things if they aren’t going his way, he’ll find a way to get layups or get to the line to get things going.
Garrett Johnson | 6’5” WF | Oakton (#30 Overall)
Johnson has really come on as off late, as a wing with good size and athleticism that’s able to score the basketball in a number of ways. In transition, he can finish above the rim and finish through traffic, and he understands spacing when he runs the floor. He’s good off the catch with a good looking stroke, and he can put it on the deck where he plays with a good change of pace and can get to his spots with a good midrange. He’s continuing to get better, and he’ll be a guy to keep an eye on moving forward.
Jaden House | 6’3” WG | Henrico (#38 Overall)
Last week, House put himself on the map with a big time performance at Big Shots Myrtle Beach 1 & 2. The 6’3” two guard looks like he may be the breakout performer in the Richmond area, as he has the ability to score the basketball from everywhere on the floor. He can shoot it off the catch from deep, especially when he gets it going, but he’s really good when attacking the basket in transition. He’s strong for his age, he can finish through contact and he has a nice midrange game as well. He’s a true three level scorer that can really fill it up consistently.
Malachi Poindexter | 6’2” G | STAB (#41 Overall)
A knock down shooter from deep, Poindexter can really score it once he gets it going. He missed all of last year at Louisa with a knee injury so he reclassified and transferred to STAB where he’ll be working with Head Coach Damin Altizer who is one of the best trainers in the area. Poindexter has natural shot making ability as he has a quick release off the catch and off the bounce, he has good range and he can make contested shots. It will be interesting to see if he can bounce back from his injury and step in as a scoring threat easy for them.
Tyler Chatman | 6’1” G | Nansemond River (#44 Overall)
A high IQ combo guard, Chatman can fill it up efficiently and also has a great feel that allows him to take care of the basketball and make plays for others. He’s a good shooter from deep who knows how to move without the ball, has great footwork and a good high release on his shot. He’s a guy who can get to his spots off the bounce, shoot the midrange and finish through traffic in the lane. His mix of IQ and scoring ability should make him one of the best scorers in the 757 this year.
Khai Seargant | 5’10” PG | Massaponax (#58 Overall)
A tough and skilled lead guard, Sergant gets buckets off of his drive and toughness as much as he does off of his ability to score it. He’s a guy who is quick off the bounce, he’s strong with the ball in his hands and he’s able to finish in traffic and in transition with his athleticism. He’s a much improved shooter off the bounce, and his midrange game has excelled this season. His height gives him a disadvantage, but he’s so tough when attacking the rim that he’s able to negate that size as well.
Jordan Parham | 5’10” PG | Huguenot (#59 Overall)
While Parham and Seargant are about the same height, their game is totally different. Parham is tough as well, but he’s methodical, skilled and is able to make tough shots from all over the floor. He can really shoot it from deep, and after a couple he’s able to blow by and get in the paint to make plays. He can hit the floater and the pull-up, plays with good pace that allows him to create space and he’s a guy who just finds ways to put the the ball in the basket.
Lorenzo Minter | 6’0” G | Colonial Heights (#88 Overall)
Minter was another breakout guy this summer, especially at the LC Bird Summer League. He can play on and off the basketball, he can attack the rim and shoot the basketball from deep off the catch or off the dribble. He has good feel as a scorer, with a great midrange game and the ability to make contested shots. He’s a guy who just makes things happen when he has the ball in his hands.
