2020 Rankings: Top Shooting Guards/Combo Guards
The shooting guard crop in 2020 is very strong and could be the best position group in all of the class. There are multiple Division I prospects in the group and they continue to improve and develop over time. Here’s a look at the highest ranked shooting guards and combo guards in the 2020 class:
Marques Warrick, Henry Clay (CKY Magic – Morton) – The long and lean lefty shooter continues to improve as he gets older. In order for Ques to reach his ceiling he’s going to have to start hitting the weights hard over the next year or so. Warrick has advanced past being just a catch and shoot player and become a much better driver and finisher through contact. Marques keeps growing and the sky is the limit for him if he reaches the 6’5 or taller mark. He should probably have a D1 offer before July ends.
Marcellus Vail, Collins (M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs) – Marcellus is a skilled and efficient scorer who is capable of scoring in bunches. Vail possesses the clutch gene and is always looking to take and make the big shot late in games. Marcellus is a bonafide D1 prospect who could earn his first college offers as soon as this month. It remains to be seen what his ceiling is as a player but Marcellus is one of the best scorers in the class and plays without fear. That’s the attitude that will carry him to the next level.
Matt Cromer, South Laurel (CKY Magic – Morton) – Matt is another kid who has no fear of the big moment. As a sophomore he almost pulled South Laurel to an upset of Corbin in the 13th region title game. This AAU season Cromer has been playing opposite of Warrick and proving to be a dynamic combo on the AAU circuit. Cromer is a lot like Vail in that he is capable of getting hot in a game and scoring 25-30 points or more. Right now Matt is likely a low D1 or high D2 player but he wouldn’t surprise anyone if he lands at the mid major D1 level.
Luke Morrison, South Oldham (Louisville Legends) – Morrison missed a large portion of the spring AAU season due to a broken nose but has come back in July to prove his merits and that he could even be ranked too low. Luke shoots the ball very well from the wing and can get hot and torch the nets. As Morrison keeps developing his game and getting more comfortable putting the ball on the floor, his potential as a college prospect just keeps going up.
Reese Smith, Boyle County – Reese has tumbled down the rankings over the last season but that’s because he’s a three sport star with 4 D1 football offers and several school records on the track. Smith is going to have a great career at Boyle as a slasher and is likely to end up among the all time leading scorers there but his future is on the football field. If Reese played AAU with the right team I’m sure he would wind up with D1 offers on the hardwood also. Just super athletic and fun to watch.
