Who’s Next? Players Most Likely to Claim Their First D1 offer in July
July AAU is just weeks away and there are several players who are anxious for their first D1 offers next month. Here’s a look at who could claim their first Division 1 scholarship offer in the coming weeks:
2019:
Brennan Canada, George Rogers Clark (M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs) – Canada is a 6’7″ stretch 4 who had some big games in the spring AAU season. Just this week, Canada took an unofficial visit to Marshall and has been getting calls from Lafayette, Lehigh and others. Marshall has also offered an official visit and that’s a good indicator than an offer could be coming.
Nick Thelen, Covington Catholic (EG10) – Long, athletic and bruising forward who isn’t afraid to mix it up with anyone, Thelen has an offer from Bellarmine but that may not be his ceiling. Nick had a strong showing as a Junior All-Star this summer and showed that he can do a little more than just run and dunk. With a strong July, Thelen could find his way into a D1 offer by the end of the month.
Derrin Boyd, Caldwell County (SI Select) – Boyd has the build and skill set to be a low D1 player. The biggest question mark is his decision making as a combo guard at the next level. If he can shore up his passing and not try to force the action, Boyd could get out of July with an offer or two.
2020:
Marques Warrick, Henry Clay (CKY Magic) – Warrick has shown signs of big time development since even the end of May. Ques has shown improved strength and finishing ability. As Warrick shows he is more than a catch and shoot player, he has a chance to earn multiple offers.
Ksuan Casey, Madisonville (We All Can Go) – Casey is so agile for a big body of his size and he doesn’t turn 16 until August. Ksuan has a very high ceiling that is only limited by how hard he wants to work when no one is watching. He’s heard from schools but he can earn multiple offers in July if he plays well.
JJ Traynor, Bardstown (The Ville) – Coaches love to offer based on potential and upside and Traynor may have more of each than anyone else in the 2020 class in Kentucky. His potential eventually needs to turn into production but Traynor has a chance to rack up a ton of offers in the not too distant future.
Marcellus Vail, Collins (M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs) – Where Traynor and Casey have big time potential, Vail produces at a high level. One of the best scorers in the class, Marcellus has been a hot name among mid major D1 coaches since the contact period started last Friday. Marcellus will have a chance to earn multiple offers with a strong July.
2021:
Darrius Washington, Fern Creek (G3 Grind) – Washington has grown and added bulk in addition to maintaining his skill level. Darrius is going to have opportunity to show his abilities on a big platform with the Grind and could absolutley pick up his first offer next month.
Kelly Niece, Simon Kenton (Indiana Elite 16u) – Niece is a skilled scorer but more importantly, he is playing on one of the best teams in the country for an organization that is known for getting offers for kids at all levels. Indiana Elite 16u is ranked #1 in the country right now and full of talented prospects so expect Kelly to at least get some good looks from college coaches.
