UCF Team Camp: Day 1 Notes
The UCF team camp opened up on Saturday with games on six different courts in the CFE Arena from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Here is a look at the standouts.
Hunter Cattoor (Bishop Moore)
It is hard to pinpoint a more poised player at the camp than 2019 Bishop Moore guard Hunter Cattoor. The 6’3″ guard hit his first three shots in the early afternoon victory over Heritage. Cattoor is the top dog for the Hornets serving as a knockdown shooter who plays with patience and vision. He’s an underrated athlete who can dunk with authority and get down court with ease.
Christian Shaneyfelt (Lakewood Ranch)
Leadership was Christian Shaneyfelt’s specialty on Saturday. I’ve seen him play a lot since his freshman year and that was the best I’ve seen from the 2020 forward. The 6’6″ wing has grown into his top role and it is showing. He is a willing passer, attacker and smart shooter. Shaneyfelt hit important shots for his side down the stretch in a 56-54 overtime win over Westminster including a game-tying lay-in to force overtime and the winning jumper in sudden death.

Toumani Camara (Chaminade Madonna)
A Belgium native, Toumani Camara caught the eyes of UCF coaches on Day 1. The 2019 Chaminade Madonna forward wasn’t hitting consistently from deep but his length and foot speed help him breeze by defenders. He is really good in transition pushing the ball. Camara touches the ball every possession. If you throw it up to the 6’7″ forward, he will usually finish evident by his various alley oops on Saturday.

Chase Johnston (Westminster)
It is difficult to find a better shooter at UCF this weekend or even in the whole state than 2019 Westminster guard Chase Johnston. The 6’3” leader has sound footwork which helps his jumpers even more. Johnston plays with constant movement on both ends of the floor, continues to knock down 3’s when he is open or not. Most impressively, he attacked and scored often on the day.

Linton Brown (Wellington)
The rave around the gym was about 2019 Wellington guard Linton Brown. He’s the next guy up at a new look Wolverines program. At 6’4″, he’s sneaky athletic with a seasoned jumper and consistent floater game. Brown turned many heads on Saturday and I expect that to be the case this fall for his senior year.
Inady Legiste (Stranahan)
For Stranahan, it was clear 2020 forward Inady Legiste was the go-to guy inside. At 6’6″, he uses every inch of his length and quite frankly has a set of post moves that will make any college coach happy. Legiste has a good feel for the paint, is solid from the mid-range and extends plays with his size and persistence.

AJ Neal (West Oaks/Showtime Ballers)
AJ Neal is playing with more purpose than ever. A year ago, the 2021 West Oaks guard was merely a 3-point specialist off the bench. Now, he’s expanded his game with vocal leadership, tough attacks to the rim and high-end passing. The 6’0″ guard, Neal is noticeably putting in the work to get better.

Layndon Newton (Lake Howell)
Talk about a pure athlete who goes to the cup and attacks. 2020 Lake Howell guard Layndon Newton is just that. The 6’4″ starter’s arrow is pointing up quickly. He makes good decisions off feeds and can create off the dribble. His footwork is coming together, but watching him, it is quite evident that he has a chance to be really sound with more seasoning.
Davon Robinson (Armwood)
Last year was the first time Davon Robinson played organized basketball in his life. You could have fooled me. The 2019 6’6″ Armwood forward plays with energy and bounce. Against Bishop Verot, he worked opposite a bulkier big man and held his own. Robinson was able to fight inside for buckets and get up for boards. His rawness could turn into consistent play soon.
G’shaun Aldridge (University Christian)
2019 University Christian G’shaun Aldridge commands a lot from his side. He sets the tone as the main ballhandler in transition and in full sets. His passing opens up a lot for his offense. At 5’11”, you never miss Aldridge on the court with his full set of attributes.
Jess Hartmann (Bishop Moore)
You’d have no clue that 2019 Bishop Moore guard spent the last week on vacation away from hoops. Jess Hartmann plays with endless toughness and is a reliable shooter much like his decisive group. At 6’0″, Hartmann can get the job done with his strength and speed, which he develops on the football field as a quarterback.
Paul Carridice (Bahamas Anatol Rodgers)
It is not often that I get to see international teams during the June months, but Bahamas Anatol Rodgers suited up at UCF. 2019 forward Paul Carridice showed well in a loss to Stranahan. The 6’5″ starter can attack inside with a solid mix of interior moves and he can strike from the mid-range with a quick shot. He was active on both ends.
