Top players in Day 3 of the Jerry Peters Memphis Summer Classic
In the final day of the Jerry Peters Memphis Summer Classic, new stars emerged as elite players on their teams. My list of elite players kept growing and growing, with new names appearing in my notebook.
I enjoyed watching every school, digging through each roster to find the names of the players, their classifications, while walking up to them asking for their phone numbers for interviews down the road. The classic ended on Sunday.
I know I’m late getting my next set of top players listed, but it’s always good to know who stood out. There are some players I missed, but I will get opportunities down the road to see the players in person.
Enough of this random typing, here’s my final list of the elite prospects in day three of the Jerry Peters Memphis Summer Classic:
- Senior guard Calvin Temple, Center Hill High School: He was arguably the best point guard on the floor during the classic. He’s the most polished point guard out there. He’s not only a legit scoring guard, but he’s also careful with the basketball. He knows when and when not to take a shot. He’s not afraid to attack the rim, and is almost perfect from the free throw line. At the end of the classic, Temple finished second in scoring (112), tied for fourth in assists (15), fourth in free throw shooting (89 percent), and tied for seventh on 3-pointers (11).
- Sophomore point guard Kennedy Chandler, Briarcrest Christian: Outside of Temple, Chandler was the other best point guard in the classic. He finished 12th in scoring (89), fifth in free throw shooting (88 percent), tied for seventh with Temple and others on 3-pointers (11), and tied for 16th in assists (12). Chandler is only going to get better as he continues to get playing time.
- Senior forward Dequarius Harris, Kirby High School: What makes Harris special is his ability to rebound. He finished sixth in that category with 45 total boards. He can score as well, whether it’s inside the paint or from 17-feet out. He scored a total of 80 points in the classic.
- Senior guard Jeremiah Miller, Southwind: He had to start at point guard, with Ashton Taylor out with a sprained ankle. Miller is a score-first point guard, and finished ninth in scoring with 96 total points. He will have to continue to score to give senior forward Kamron Jones some help on the offensive end.
- Sophomore forward Randy Brady, Brentwood Academy: He can get his points from different areas of the court, which makes a defender’s job hard from the jump. He finished with 82 total points.
- Freshman guard Chandler Jackson, CBHS: At 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, Jackson has a high motor and plays hard on both ends of the court. He’s very athletic, and doesn’t have a problem getting into the lane. His 3-point and mid-range shooting can improve. He finished with 81 total points.
