Top Performers: Florida Southern Team Camp (Day 3)
Florida Southern team camp wrapped up on Sunday with a full slate on the athletic center’s three courts.
A good environment was set and the coaches on the Florida Southern staff were busy making sure things ran smoothly; which it did.
Here is a look at the best players from Day 3.
ICYMI: Part 1
Van Wilkes (Winter Park)
The younger brother of FSU rising sophomore forward Wyatt Wilkes, Van has a workman’s like approach to the game. The 6’5″ guard/forward is an impressive 3-point shooter and a guy who can work inside on hop steps, spin moves and lay-ins. A 2020 athlete, Wilkes is the top dog for Winter Park.
Dionte Blanch (East Lake)
2020 East Lake guard Dionte Blanch continues to be talked about whether it is in Tampa or out. A quiet leader, the 6’3″ guard is able to contort his body to get past defenders and score. Blanch’s jump shot continues to get better. He’s talented with the ball in his hands and he routinely chases back on defense to play tough.
Luke Anderson (Lakeland)
At 6’7″, Luke Anderson is essentially a point forward. He’s able to distribute, attack and shoot when he wants to. Playing without four of Lakeland’s top athletes (all at football camps), Anderson was tasked to do more than usual. The 2019 forward had five blocks in the first half of the matchup against East Lake. He battles on the boards and earns open looks. He had a block on the final play to seal a 47-45 win over Seminole. Anderson told me that he’s narrowing his list down to three Division I schools.
Josh Young (Lakewood Ranch)
Not overly athletic, 2019 Lakewood Ranch forward Josh Young continues to mature. He is a true team player at his 6’6″ frame. He’s attacking more, looks stronger in his upper body and was able to get to the rack often. Young has a nice mid-range stroke as well. His rebounding and boxing out ability are always consistent.
Dean Gabrelcik (East Lake)
East Lake has a really sound rising sophomore in Dean Gabrelcik. The 6’4″ 2021 guard is a distributor who likes to take smart shots and feed his teammates crisp passes. He rarely, if ever comes out of games. Gabrelcik’s 3-pointer is deadly at times, even when he has a hand in his face.
Christian Shaneyfelt (Lakewood Ranch)
On a deep Lakewood Ranch group filled with seniors a year ago, Christian Shaneyfelt settled in. Fast forward a few months and the 2020 guard/forward looks like a completely different player. Always a sharpshooter from outside, the 6’6″ Shaneyfelt is passing upcourt a lot and making smart decisions as a vocal leader and reliable playmaker.
Tyrik Williams (Haines City)
Early in the day, Haines City found success in games showing its athleticism and ability to pace the floor. 2019 guard Tyrik Williams was the most consistent offensive factor for the Hornets. The 6’1″ athlete was showing off his elusiveness. He loves to draw contact inside and attack relentlessly.
Alvin Tumblin (Sebring)
There is still work to be done as a steady scorer, but 2021 Sebring forward Alvin Tumblin is packed with energy and athleticism. The 6’4″ forward is an attacking wing who finds his way into the paint more often than not. Most impressively, he cleaned up numerous misses from his teammates with his jumping lay-ins.
Elijah McClain (Haines City)
Playing the center role for Haines City, Elijah McClain does his job inside. The 6’5″ 2019 big man grabs rebounds from guys bigger than him, works for floater looks and has a nice touch on his 8-10 foot mid-range jumper. McClain will be a core inside feeder for the Hornets.
