Top 2020 Wings
What wing prospects in the state of Illinois have established themselves as the best of the best? Here are the top ranked 2020 shooting guards and small forwards.
Isaiah Rivera (Geneseo)
Current Ranking: #4
Travel Team: Quad City Elite
With Lamontay Daughtery moving out of state this Geneseo wing takes over the top wing spot in the class. The 6’4” 2020 is a strong wing that still has some room to grow vertically. His offensive skill set is at another level compared to others on the floor at the 16U level. As a scorer he can beat you with a feathery jumper from the perimeter, but if you get up too tight he will take it to the rack. Smooth acceleration off the bounce and finishes through contact. Playmaker with the ball in the open floor as he can finish himself taking it all the way for a dunk or finding teammates. Excellent getting others involved with his passing making some insane dishes. Rebounds well for his position. Impressed with the growth he has made on the defensive end of the floor. Rivera isn’t the quickest on the defensive end, but uses positioning and active hands to make plays. Rivera is a player high-majors and mid-major plus schools should be watching in July.
Ramean Hinton (Curie)
Current Ranking: #5
Travel Team: Team Rose
Hinton was already a top 20 prospect in the 2020 class, but he elevated his stock even more with his play this spring into the top five. The power wing from Curie has size and athleticism for days. Powerful getting in the lane and finishing at the cup. The area he has improved the most is his perimeter jump shot. He was really confident in his shot going down. Pull up jumper has become a strength of his. Rugged wing also gets on the glass. Hinton plays so hard. Mid-majors should start to have him on their radar.
Jayden Johnson (Batavia)
Current Ranking: #10
Travel Team: Fundamental U
Johnson is an ultra-productive wing. He will never jump off the floor at you athletically, but he is just so skilled. Johnson is a 6’5” wing that can really shoot the basketball from the perimeter. Outstanding shooter particularly off the catch. Johnson lets it fly from deep with a lot of confidence. Can also shot fake and finish in the lane with a runner. Competes on the glass. He was pretty consistent scoring in the upper teens all weekend except for his last game where he struggled. Johnson should be on the mid-major radar in 2020.
Dante Maddox (Bloom)
Current Ranking: #11
Travel Team: Mac Irvin Fire
Maddox is a 6’2” shooting guard that can really fill it up from deep. Best as spot up shooter from three that when in rhythm is one of the premier shooters in his class. Mixes in a transition finish on occasion and can score some off the bounce. Would like to see him continue to diversify his game and show more lead guard skills as a passer at his height. Definitely a D1 prospect with his ability to score it.
Keshawn Williams (Bloom)
Current Ranking: #12
Travel Team: Young & Reckless
The Bloom 2020 two guard can get buckets. Microwave type scorer that when he heats up he gets rolling fast! Williams did the majority of his damage this spring on drives off the bounce finishing with acrobatic layups and floaters. Also gets out in transition. Capable three point shooter off the catch. Low-major plus/mid-major minus prospect.
Davis Walker (Home School)
Current Ranking: #15
Travel Team: Team RWA
Walker is a home schooled 6’1” combo guard that really impressed with his play for Team RWA at Battle at the Lakes. The 2020 wing was lights out for the most part drilling mid-range pull ups from all over the floor. Also connected on a pull up threes. Good strength and athleticism out of this guard which allow him to finish in the paint. He is more than just a scorer as he displays a solid understanding of the game making crisp dishes. Defensively he moves well laterally and got several steals. Low-majors and mid-majors need to monitor him this July.
Demarius Splunge (Orr)
Current Ranking: #17
Travel Team: Chicago Elite
Bit of an up and down spring for the talented Orr wing. He has great size on the perimeter along with strength to overpower smaller defenders. The effort wasn’t consistently there and that hurt him. When he did play with a motor for Team Rose he showed some productivity, but it wasn’t always there. Made the switch over the Chicago Elite where he will try to regain his momentum as one of the more physically gifted wings in the class.
Will Wolfe (Aurora Christian)
Current Ranking: #18
Travel Team: Illinois Wolves
The Aurora Christian 2020 wing was impressive this spring for the Illinois Wolves. He is listed at 6’6” and has long arms along with a nice frame to continue to add strength. Consistently gets to the lane off the dribble. Excellent decision maker in traffic. Clean looking stroke from the perimeter. Will be a plus shooter long term. He is the catalyst that makes the Wolves go. Low-majors should take a look this July.
Kee Hargrow (Joliet Central)
Current Ranking: #19
Travel Team: Young & Reckless
This is one of the hardest prospects to pin down in the class. Hargrow is a 6’8” long and rangy combo forward from Joliet Central. He burst on the scene last spring with Meanstreets and after a bit of a bumpy year at Joliet Central he is starting to show his immense potential again with Young & Reckless. He has greatly improved his perimeter skill level over the last year. Jumper has become a weapon despite a release where it seems like he is pushing it toward the hoop. Can play above the rim with big dunks. Hargrow can be a bit wild with the ball and didn’t rebound at as high of a rate as we would have liked we when saw him. Defensively he has length and timing which allows him to be a shot blocking presence. Low-majors should keep tabs on him.
