Top 2019 Guards
The state of Michigan has a ton of talented players, especially at the guard position. In this article, I will break down five of the top guards in the state.
Rocket Watts (Old Redford Academy)
Watts can flat out score the ball. He’s got insane range and if a defender tries to press him, he has the speed to blow by them and finish at the rim. However, his best attribute has to be his ball handling ability. Watts is deadly in iso and pick and roll situations because of his ability to read what the defense is doing. Watts is Prep Hoops No. 2 overall player in the state. He’s received a ton of Division I offers and should be a great player at the next level.
Harlond Beverly (Southfield Christian)
Beverly is an absolute nightmare for opposing teams. The 6-foot-5 guard is great at catching lobs, finishing at the rim and finding the open space on the court. He has an incredibly high basketball IQ and makes everyone on the court better. When he has the ball in his hands, you know something good is going to happen. Like Watts, Beverly has a ton of Division I offers and will excel at the next level.
Donavan Moore (West Bloomfield)
Moore is athletic freak that reminds me a lot of Victor Oladipo. He is a really good defender that takes steals and finishes with authority on the other end. He is great at catching lobs, getting out in transition and getting to the basket. The 6-foot-3 guard is a player that everyone should get out and watch before he graduates. Moore is committed to the University of Toledo.
Drew Lowder (Ann Arbor Pioneer)
Lowder reminds me a lot of Kyrie Irving because of his shake and bake style of play and his insane finishing ability. Lowder is fantastic with the ball in his hands. If he’s not beating his man off the dribble, he’s finding the open man for a good look. Lowder is very shifty and has a great first step, making it tough for defenders to stay in front of him. He has a few Division I offers and will pick up a lot more during his senior year.
Daniel Friday (UD Jesuit)
If you haven’t had the chance to watch Friday play, get out and do it. He is one of the best all-around players in the state. I watched him during the state playoffs and he was dominating the glass and finding open teammates while scoring double digit points. Not only is Friday a great offensive threat, but he is great at using his length on defense to force opposing players into bad shots. I really like Friday’s game and believe he has what it takes to play at the Division I level.
