Summer Time Grind Summer League Notebook 6/13
We were back in the gym for last night’s slate of games at the Under Armour House in Baltimore City for the Summer Time Grind Summer League. Here are some notes from the players that stood out.
Carlos Alexander | 5’11 | St. Frances ’22
-Alexander has the ability to be one of the top freshman in the state and he proved why in last night’s game. The 5-foot-10 lefty scored 18 points in a win over Patterson, scoring from all three levels. He’s extremely crafty off the dribble and beyond his years finishing around the rim with finesse.
Ace Baldwin | 6’1 | St. Frances ’20
-Fresh off the plane from an unofficial visit to Louisville, Baldwin led the Panthers with 19 points and played with great pace throughout. His ability to hit three’s off the dribble has improved dramatically from last season as well with his range. Baldwin had his usual handful of flashy no-look passes for open teammates in the paint for easy looks.
Gerard Mungo | 6’1 | Patterson ’19
-Mungo had a game-high 20 points in the loss to St. Frances. In the second half, he got hot from deep nailing all three of his made triples. Mungo is no stranger to contact when he penetrates into the paint, and displayed just that by finishing tough lay ups through contact throughout the game.
TJ Thomas | 6’2 | Patterson ’19
-Thomas put together a solid scoring performance by recording 15 points as he and Mungo created much of the offense for the Clippers. The 6-foot-2 guard hit two threes, was 3-of-4 from the charity stripe and had a few impressive finishes in traffic.
Darrius Tilghman | 6’3 | City ’21
-Tilghman stood out with his willingness to attack the seams of New Town’s zone defense. By doing so, he opened up shots for teammates and opportunities for himself around the rim, where he took advantage. He also let his presence be known on the offensive glass. New Town has decent size in their backline, but Tilghman was relentless in earning second chance opportunities by grabbing the ball at its peak.
Dominic Carrington | 5’10 | City ’20
-Carrington continues to put together a solid summer league for City. The Mt. Carmel transfer provided energy throughout on both ends. His quick hands were the result of multiple steals and fast break opportunities. Offensively, he was aggressive looking to score from all three levels.
Martaz Robinson | 6’2 | New Town ’20
-Robinson is the clear floor general and is persistent that his team executes the correct sets called from the sidelines. He had strong takes in transition and a few in the half court, but wasn’t finishing as efficiently as usual.
Andrew Mills | 6’4 | New Town ’20
-This was my first time seeing Mills in summer league and he provided needed energy for New Town. It all started with a strong take with his right hand going baseline, in which he finished with a one-handed flush to wake the crowd up. He played off Robinson’s penetration by cashing in on open catch-and-shoot three’s as well as dump off passes in the paint.
Jalen Parker | 6’6 | Milford Mill
– Parker is long-limbed wing who capitalized when he got the ball. He had a couple of dunks, one coming after attacking a wild close-out off the dribble and the other from a dump off pass. He was active on the defensive side by being a presence on the glass and a shot-blocker in the paint.
Jermaine Goodwyn | 6’2 | Milford Mill
-Goodwyn is going to see the ball in his hands much more often this upcoming season for the Millers. The lefty can mix it up well creating for others off the dribble as well as putting the ball in the basket himself. His jumpshot is still in need of improvement, but he finishes efficiently around the rim and can slither his way through traffic to get up his crafty lay ups.
