Recruiting Report: Jack Thompson (2019)
St. Thomas Academy point guard Jack Thompson led the Cadets to the Class AAA State Tournament for the second straight season in 2017-18 and now the goal is a third straight year of playing in late March.
“Next year we have three returning varsity players coming back,” Jack told Prep Hoops. “We have a lot of spots to fill, but I know there are a lot of JV guys who have been working hard to get ready to fill those roles. Our expectations are to get back to state for the third straight season, and then to make it out of the first round and play in the Target Center.”
Those three returning varsity players are Tony Wright, Noah Chamberlain, and Thompson. Jack averaged 11.4 points a game as a junior while leading the team in assists (about four a game) plus grabbing 3.2 rebounds on average. Thompson shot 48.5 percent from the field on his 9-10 shot attempts a game and made 35.4 percent of his three-pointers.
“I have been working on my strength by getting in the weight room, as well as working on my finishing through contact,” Thompson said. Jack is also playing with the Minnesota Comets who are in the Great Plains Alliance this weekend and won their first game beating the South Dakota Attack.
“I’ve really enjoyed this season so far,” Jack said.” I think my favorite moment was going 4-0 in Dallas. As a team we are finally back at full strength. So, I think our next goal to accomplish is to win the Great Plains Alliance tournament and then make a deep run in the NY2LA association tournament.”
At this point three strong Minnesota college programs have been in the most regular contact with Thompson about his basketball future.
“A lot of different schools have reached out with some interest and camp invites,” Jack explained. “The ones that have contacted me the most as of late are Southwest Minnesota State, St. John’s, and St. Thomas.
“I have already attended the SMSU camp and had a great time. I have also already visited St. John’s. I don’t have dates for any other visits so far, but am planning to go on some once the 17u season is over.”
